to be honest I just hit the button to continue conversation and don't really care because for the most part it doesn't matter.
However if you give adequate to both sides then there is an agreement in place where both sides treat it as peace.
So if you swap Markarth and Riften and get compensation paid by the stormcloaks it seems like the most fair ending.
This makes the opposing faction think better of you, as you do a good job of being peace maker.
However, it also makes your own faction slightly upset, as they think you could've done more for them.
All depends on how much you even care about the Civil War.
