Stuck in Forbidden Legend {solved}
In the Forbidden Legend, quite a long Quest, I have collected the three parts of the Gauldur Amulet, read the Journal of Daynas Valen, and read the three Writs of Sealing. All three parts of the the Gauldur Amulet are in my inverntory. So the next step would be to reforge the amulet.

All the tasks in the quest list are showing up as completed BUT the problem is that the next step (which I learned from the website is Reforge the Gualdur Amulet) is not showing in the Quest.

What am I missing (or what have I done wrong), any ideas ?

Please help, Grandad Brian

(FYI, I did not have the previous 2 Writs of Sealing or he Journal of Daynas Valen in my inventory when getting the third, but I had read them - of course, the two amulets were in my inventory when I got the third.)

The writs aren't important, I've sold them before, with no consequences. Not sure why you aren't getting the next step in the quest, there is a console command "Player.setstage", but you need to know the questid and what level to set it to. This can force the quest into the next step, thus telling you were to go. Perhaps you can google it.

Hmm.. it can go wrong if you read Valens Journal mid way through the quest instead of when you are led to Fol.. Fol something or other.. where that journal is.
If you were able to drop, or otherwise get rid of the writs, then they aren't of any importance. I usually wait until I read the book, um.. , is that called lost legends, too? I forget.

Does re-reading Valens Journal do anything?

Check out the UESP Wiki and find the quest name then use ~ getstage "questname" to see where you're at. You may be able to fix it up with a ~ setstage command. Good luck you. :D

I did not read it until after I had the first amulet ... unfortunately, rereading it did not fix it -- good ideas ! I am not sure where to type ~getstage etc... being an old guy, and I am unsure what a consoul command is ? Willing to learn, Brian

From the wiki:
While Daynas Valen's Journal is a quest-related item, reading it before reading Lost Legends will cause the quest stages to stumble upon each other. First, it will render Lost Legends useless. Reading Lost Legends will then render all three writs of sealing and the Ancient Edict useless. If you read them in a different order, the quest will initiate but will not update.

If you stumble upon this bug, the only solution is to find Daynas Valen in Folgunthur and read his notes. The quest will then start and proceed from quest stage 30.

Quest stage 30 is:
Long ago, the Archmage Gauldur was murdered by his three sons, who stole his amulet of power and divided it among themselves. The brothers were hunted down in secret and sealed in tombs across Skyrim. To reclaim the amulet, I will need to seek out their final resting places.
Objective 31: Find the Gauldur Amulet Fragment in Folgunthur
Objective 32: Find the Gauldur Amulet Fragment in Geirmund's Hall
Objective 33: Find the Gauldur Amulet Fragment in Saarthal
Objective 100: Reforge the Gauldur Amulet

and

If after collecting all three amulet pieces your journal doesn't update with the final phase of the quest, you can proceed to Reachwater Rock and complete the quest as if it did update. The quest will complete after defeating the brothers and upon receiving the fused amulet.

Reachwater Rock is east-southeast of Markarth and south of Sky Haven Temple.

Hope this helps.

I strongly recomend UESP wiki .. this page is amazing every quest has detail walkthrough with known bugs and solutions for it. I have it bookmarked in my browser for quite long time. Saved my but many times. And this makes for all morrowind-skyrim LE elder scrolls games 😀.

O.. K.. A.. Y..

First things first. Make a save and remember its number. I'm old, too, so write it down?

To access the in-game consol you press the tilde ( ~ ) key once - which is different on different keyboards. e.g. on my UK Microsoft keyboard it's left of the keyboard "1 " above the Tab key.
You'll know when it's done right, so don't stress out. :D

Once you've got it open, just start typing and type... GetStage dunGauldersonQST ( upper / lower case is irrelevant, it's just notational format ) and hit Enter / Return and the consol will return a number. We'll take it from there, Grandad. God, two old men holding hands! :-)

Thank you, folks !!! Followed all of your advice, learned about console commands, and completed the Quest. The issue was that I started the Forbidden Legend and got the first amulet, then did other stuff and chanced upon Reachwater Rock and went in up to the door puzzle, then a long time afterwards I went back the Forbidden Quest and got the other two amulets ... for whatever reason, the next step never showed after retrieving the 3 amulets BUT I used ~ setstage dungauldursonqst 110, then went and solved the door puzzle in Reachwater Rock and completed the quest - the appropriate notice appear upon completion of the quest, and Forbidden Legend was moved to the Completed Quest List. All as it should be !!

Thank you so much guys, Brian

Looks like they're right. The quest doesn't need to update for you to reforge the amulet.

I've reforged the amulet, but the quest still appears active and in the first stage (Investigate the Gauldur legend). I have no idea what I did wrong, but I'm just going to ignore it and move on. I've already done all the main quests anyway, I'm just going through and cleaning up the side quests.

Maybe I reforged the amulet without actively getting the quest in the first place, then read the book, so now it's stuck? I don't know since it's been a couple of years since I got the thing, but since I already have the complete amulet I'm just going to call it done and move on.

What worked for me was disabling the ghost dad and enabling him right after.
