How to start Hearthfire?
Ok, so I came back to the game and bought Hearthfire (yeah, you know why!). But how do i do anything with it? It didn't seem to install, isn't listed in my datafiles dialog and when I log in, I get no quests or notifications...?

Anything obvious I'm missing? It didn't seem to install, in that there was no option to do so.

thank you.

At some point in the game, a courier should come up to you with a letter from the Jarl of Falkreath. That's what enables the ability to eventually own land and build a house (some work required first, I think you might also have to begin the process of becoming Thane). Everything else in the game is pretty much available from the start, AFAIK.

You can go to Falkreath and aske the Jarl for work. You have to do 2 quests for him and he will allow you to buy land. Also do quest for the Jarls in Dawnstar and Morthal. These all lead to buying houses and becoming Thane of the 3 holds.

Hearthfire is more of a 'background' DLC. There is really nothing to 'start'. Just go around and do other things, and the Hearthfire stuff will become apparent.

You need to be level 5, then you get a letter from the Jarl of Falkreath. He has the easiest plot of land to get. I like the Hjaalmarch location the best, as it's more central and has the best views. But you need to be level 20 before you can do the Dawnstar quest to become a Thane.

That would be level 9. As previously mentioned, there's nothing really to start with Hearthfire. There aren't really any special quests for it, it just gives you the option to build some houses after you meet a few conditions with some of the Jarls. Just talk to them. With Falkreath, you'll have to wait until you're contacted by the courier. You also get the option to adopt a couple of kids. Again, just talk to some of them.

As Docksprock has stated. This DLC is more of a background DLC much like the workshop DLC in Fallout 4 it can start whenever you want to. With or without the courier.

When you open the game click on **Data Files** to check you have the DLC activated. Go to falkreath, give the jarl a bottle of black briar mead and then kill the bandit chief for him. You should then be able to buy the plot of land from his consort erm I mean steward.

I need Hearthfire DLC because a lot of the house mods on nexus say you have to have it.

Indeed. He's just there to tip you off; but if you already know the process, you can build houses or adopt at any level.
