Help please. Candlelight spell doesn't light

I'm playing purely vanilla game and have been trying to use the Candlelight spell to light up dark areas. I cast the spell and I see a purple progress bar as it counts down but there is no visible effect. The area doesn't brighten at all and can see no orb of light other than the spell ball in my hand, which also doesn't brighten. Also, closing and exiting game makes no difference. The problem persists in 1st person and 3rd person. Also this is a new save game, so shouldn't be corrupted.

Also, taking torches from the sconces in the mine is problematic. They don't last long, and the mine gets darker with each one used up.

Load order sorted with LOOT? After running LOOT be sure to click on the button in the upper right that says "Sort" when hovered over, then click "Apply" once it appears.

Mods and even the dlc in the wrong order can produces this type of bug, so no, not spam. This is the best place to start as it is the most common cause for this sort of conflict.

To the OP, do you have the three DLCs?

Missed the vanilla part.

Open the Data Files section in the Skyrim Launcher and make sure your files are in this order;
dawnguard
hearthfires
dragonborn
official high res packs in numerical order.

Also, try validating your files following this guide.

Thank you. I just discovered that casting this spell requires the L-Mouse to be held down to sort of charge and throw the spell. I feel silly now. How was I supposed to know that? :)

Sounds like Magelight, not Candlelight. Candlelight is just cast and floats above you, Magelight lets you "throw" an orb of light that sticks to objects/creatures.

Only some heal spells are channeled, all the rest need to be cast.
