can't find a horse to buy

I'd like to buy a horse. The stable in Windhelm has three horses in the stalls, but no keeper to sell me one. The one in Whiterun has no horses and the keeper says he sold me his last one (he's right I DID buy his last one). In Solitude the keeper has three horses in the stalls, says he sold me his last one, but I never bought one from him. In Markarth, the keeper has three horses in the stalls, but will only give me the option to buy a dog. Any way I can get one of these horses legally?

In a related question... on a number of occasions, I have run across horses whose owners had obviously died. Is it possible to adopt one of these? They have the usual steal horse flag up when mounting them, but the one I did this to, for some reason, did not tally a stolen horse in my crime stats.

My advice is to look in Markarth and all the other holds. There must be a couple of bugs. On another note, did your other horses die? Also you could get the Dawngaurd expansion and get the summonable demon horse, Arvak.

I am not sure why you can't buy a horse. You should be able to. Maybe you should look for your old horse.

You can always go to Riften and do the quest Stabilized by talking to Shadr. Once complete you can freely take the horses from Riften stables.

You can also do this easy quest to get a free horse.

Yes, I assume that the previous four horses passed away.... They simply dissapeared when out of sight and could not be retreived by fast traveling. I actually began the Frost quest line but demurred completing it because I would have to sacrifice my character's principles to get it. Hadn't heard of that Riften quest. I'm off to investigate...

Edit... LOL. I had forgotten about the Rfiten stable. When I got there I found no keeper, but there was a lost horse there with my name on it!

But if you still can't find one, then it's worth it all-around to get the expansions, I have all 3, and i LOVE them. But then again I got them for xBox on sale, but still. Great stories, and more shouts, and a summonnable spectral horse.

Markarth, Riften, Whiterun, Solitude, and Windhelm each has a single horse you can purchase. In Markarth you can also buy the dog. There are no more buyable horses in the vanilla game. I won't add any spoilers about possible reward horses unless you want to know.

And no, found horses can not be permenantly claimed.

As Wisard says, found horses do go back to the place you did find them.
But if all horses you did buy did get killed. That is one shame. What are you doing? Dont you take care of the beasts? Shame on you.
Even if they did dissaper you can still find them, GO BACK.

i prefer to create a BAT file to place a horse at my side as needed "especially within cities".
My favorite horse is ETHEREAL because you can shoot thru it with a bow and all manor of beasts cannot harm it . here's the code 10bf90 or player.placeatme 10bf90
another tip: make a double horse bat file .... ride one for 20 feet ...dismount and then ride the other one and your follower will ride the first one.

You didn't use a horse related mod by any chance?

One called "Horses for Followers" removed all the horses from the stables in my game, or at least the ones I'd ridden horses from.

With "Whistle" if you have lost any horse they will find you when you initiate the "Power" whistle.
