Tolfdir's Alembic?

I found Tolfdir's Alembic but can't give it back to Tolfdir...there is no dialogue option.

I can even drop it as if it werent a quest item, and picking it up doesnt cause my questlog to update or anything.

How can I console command my way out of this? Please help

Drop the Alembic then find Tolfdir and ask if there is anything you can do for him. He should then ask you to find the Alembic. This is a a request that can be repeated for small monetry gains more than once but I think he must make the request before you have the Alembic

I didnt pick the alembic first. I talked to Tolfdir, got the quest (though its in the miscallenous section instead of a main quest and has no map marker even when set to active) then found the alembic thanks to Skyrik Wiki, no quest updates like "return to tolfdir", but I returned to him anyway and I only got the option "What did you want me to do again?"

You should be able to ask that question then he will repeat the request to which you respond that you have found it.

nevermind I found the numbers needed to advance the quest in the UESPwiki

so what is the generic code again?

I would first try resetting the quest. resetquest <quest ID>
