Setstage command not working
okay, so before you jump all over me, I have tried just about every other way possible of getting around this, and none have worked, so I'm trying this. However, I can't, because when I type in the command (in this case setstage mq104 10), nothing happens. I don't get a "started message", or a journal entry, or anything. can anyone help?

This appears to be caused by Irileth being completely missing in the game. You have to first enable her through the console (prid 0001a67f followed by enable), then place her at you while you are still in Dragonsreach (moveto player) and finally, advance the quest (setstage MQ104 10 then setstage MQ104 40). The quest rewards will be added to your inventory and Irileth will start running towards the tower

I know, but I can't use the command setstage. that's what this is about. so I can't do that.
Have you used the Prid 0001a67f command followed by enable, this seems to be a pre-requisite for the setstage command for this quest.

yep. multiple times. then i get to the setstage part and nothing happens.

i just have irileth walking up to talk to the jarl.
Then your only hope is an earlier save.

which I have tried... multiple times. I have also tried waiting, starting a new game, doing things differently when interacting with farengar, and running LOOT about twenty times.
Have you tried move to me command, you know get down to the tower, and move ireleth to you, see if that does anything.

It works, but I have to enable her first. then she walks upstairs to stare at the jarl.

Skyrim, Skyrim SE and Workshop forums are so flooded with posts that it is hard for me to keep up. Did I already recommend you to try and validate your game files with cleared appcache folder?

No, I'll do that.

No, I'll do that.
So, I did this, but when I reopened my files there was not a new Skyrim or Skyrim prefs file. I just moved the old ones back. is there something else I should do?
Thanks for the help!

Did you run the default launcher once and allowed the game to configure? That will create new Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini files for you, if they are not present.

I ran the default launcher, but I did it through Mod Organizer. would that affect it?
I will notet that I did not see .ini files under those names in that folder, but I did find "configuration settings files" under those names and that's what I removed. I might have removed the wrong thing.

Oh, you are with MO? Good. It is my preferred mod manager as well.

Thing is that MO uses separate set of configuration files for each profile you have. They are stored under ...Mod Organizer\profiles\<ProfileName>. They will override the default files you use.

But that is actually not something you should worry with this case. There is nothing in those files that would have effect on Irileth being present in your game. Validating your data files was the point.

Just in case though, open the default launcher once and make sure that game has configured correctly. Otherwise MO and SKSE will not work correctly.

If you did not find INI-files, then you probably do not have file extensions active.

Windows 10 in File Explorer > View Tab to the right are check boxes for File Extensions and Hidden Files.
