Companions quests broken

When I complete "Take up Arms" for the Companions I get the misc. objective to talk to the companions leaders for work, and when I talk to everyone no one has any dialogue options to give me work. I've tried waiting and using console commands to skip to Trouble in Skyrim but that's really broken too. I've only used console commands to resurrect the priest in Falkreath, complete the misc objective "bring ancient falmer tome to urag" (because i did and it wasn't completing) and tlc to get unstuck occasionally, but those shouldn't have bugged out companion quests...I have mods but none of them should conflict with the NPCs or story, it's all graphics mods/beauty mods

I'm contemplating just restarting my game entirely, even though im kinda far in the playthrough . It bugs me that much . And I don't think there's a save that could fix it

Have you checked with the console at what stage it thinks you are at?

showquesttargets - shows all quest ids
getstage (questid) - shows quest stage for quest id chosen.

Farkas is the one who asks if you want to help him with some trouble, which starts "Trouble in Skyrim".

You might already know all this but thought it worthwhile anyway.

There are only two members you have to ask for quests Farkas and Aela, if one isn't giving you the quests it's the other....

Other members can give you quests after you've done enough sidequests for Farkas and Aela, but that's only after you've done the ones for Farkas and Aela....


I realise I've said those two names a lot....... because it's them you need to speak to...

Yes, and I've said I've talked to EVERYONE. Farkas and Aela don't have dialogue for work when I talk to them..

It looks as if there's a part of an old quest that didn't complete and you'll have to use a console command to finish it:

When returning to Jorrvaskr Vilkas does not appear outside, he is inside doing his usual daily routine. Instead, the quest marker points to Skjorn. After turning in the shards, the quest ends and the companions questline simply stops. The quest log has the miscelaneous quest "Talk to the companions leaders for work", but they never offer work, and the "Proving Honor" quest is marked as completed and grayed out, despite that the last objective (return to Jorrvaskr) is left incomplete, and the Companions questline simply ends at that point, with no possibility of continuing on without console commands to initiate the next quest in the series. Also, there is no free weapon given by Eorlund, he will not sell Skyforge Steel, and will not train in Smithing.

It's not advisable to use console commands as a matter of course, but if the UESP wiki advises it it's usually ok.
