Werewolves strike me as proud, fierce, beautiful beings that have the land shiver from their howl.
The Vampires in the game strike me as a cannibal cult. Disgusting, ugly, evil. I'm pretty sure the vampires in this game don't just suck blood, they eat flesh as well.
Werewolves gives you the option of remaining human, but having a reliable transformation when things get rough. Vampires just make you ugly and stay that way.
I used to play as a Vampire, though. But I realized I never had any use for the human vampire spells. Only the transformation. And the transformation grew weak over time. Eventually, my character was at the point where the transformation was weaker than my human form.
I know. Really biased post, but I just don't like vampires. :P
You don't need to accept vampirism in order to enter the soul cairn. You can, let's say, find something within that makes you better. God.. I'm terrible at NOT writing a spoiler. :D
Ah, interesting. I for one am more towards the vampire side; hear me out.
Yes, vampires are ugly, but they are people. Playing as a blood sucking 'monster' adds depth to oneself in the land of Skyrim. Do you accept the discrimination of those around you simply for having the disease?
From a role playing standpoint, I play a pacifist (unless extremely necessary) vampire. I am heartbroke of the hatred imposed on me and so spend most my time shamefully lurking in the shadows. I cover my face when I enter cities as not to scare anybody and never feed on blood. However, despite this, I am still human.
It's funny that you should stereotype vampires though because werewolves are equally frowned upon within the beautiful world of Skyrim. A citizen will not evade you for having glowing eyes and a thrist for blood but will if they hear the horrifying roar of a werewolf. People cursed with Lycanthropy are often denoted as uncontrollable, impulsive and rancid.
To conclude, a vampire's benefits, in my opinion, nullify a werewolve's benefits as vampires get so many passive abilities and unique powers. As a werewolf does, a vampire gets immunity to disease, however, vampires also obtain bonuses to stealth and magic, frost resistance (whilst concurrently receiving a weakness to fire, I will add), vampire lord form and posion immunity. Factors like this make it impossible to take any sort of bias towards werewolves.
P.S. I loved my werewolf playthrough, just creating a debatable topic! :P
I like exploring a ton, and although playing during night with a lantern or torch with a mod that adjusts lighting is definitely fun and feels great, I still like exploring during the day. Both gameplay and roleplay wise, that just doesn't fit with vampires.
I can't say for absolute certain which one I prefer though. Vampires have both pros and cons, and werewolves are more consistent since the negatives aren't huge, but that's pretty boring in itself. Last time I was a werewolf was a very long time ago, and it wasn't really a huge difference, just transform and go ham.
They're both pretty equal to me honestly, though I haven't played the Companions questline, and I've only gotten halfway through Dawnguard, and even then I sided with the Dawnguard instead, so my opinion isn't set in stone yet
Sometimes I just use Undeath and be a Lich instead.
But not the Dragonborn, eh Harkon?
Im just saying a VL who has mastered their power would most likley beable to go toe to toe with someone like Umaril the Unfeatured who was a half-ayleid Demiprince or something like that and Harkon alone showed he was powerful enough to cast spells such as a nearly inderstuctable blood shield that could only be broken with a divine weapon, a werewolf however I cannot picture even being remotley capable of doing something like that.
Hey - it was just an observation, not a comparison - lol
25% more powerful illusion, changes the max level of creature illusions effect. There are no way to increase this aside for perks. A vampire illionist will always be the best.
25% better stealth. Not a huge deal unless you get it in early levels, but it is a large bonus. Works great with silent casting stealth/illusion build.
Health/Stam regen limitation in sunlight can be overcome with any magic item that increases the regen %. It completely removes the effect while equiped.
50% Cold resists is amazing for warrior builds as cold magic is the worst type to deal with.
50% Fire weakness, this gets you killed. Fire is the highest damage magic in the game. That said it's easy to overcome, Dark Elf/Breton/The Lord stone or the The Atronach Stone.
Both resist disease but vampires resist poison.
If illusion or stealth are your game, then vampire wins hands down. If you want no effort bonuses with no down side, then werewolf wins hands down.
There is one last thing about vampires, that makes them better. Something that makes them the best for everything. In the resoration tree the perk Necromage that increases effects of magic on undead. It increases the bonus % you get from all magic items. This one thing although not related directly to vampires changes everything.
So Vampire in the end, always.
