For conversion you can simply use Cathedral Assets Optimizer.
That said, no, meshes aren't compatible between the two versions. They will display in-game, but using a mesh for the wrong version will give you relentless crashes.
The only files that I know of that work in both versions are texture and sound files. That's it.
For mods that I have back-ported, actually, I don't do this with the original file. I just open it up in TES5Edit (yes, you can do that with SE esps) and just make another mod with identical edits. That's the only backporting I've ever gotten to work. Though now I hear there's a plugin for TES5Edit that can backport esps for you, but I have yet to try it out. And no, you can't just re-save it in the creation kit. The LE creation kit can't convert plugins like the SE version can apparently.
For now, just stick to mods that only contain texture and sound files. Ignore everything else. If you really want to backport a mod that is just a simple esp, you can technically do that, though it requires a bit of knowledge about TES5Edit to pull it off. You could try that TES5Edit script I mentioned. Sadly, I can't remember the name of the link myself, and sadly the mod is in French. Doing an English search may not turn up anything.
