stuck on the 'blood on the ice' quest

ive investigated the house, talked to the lady in the hall of the dead, sold the necklace to the butcher, stole the butchers journal in his chest via pickpocteting his key, but my questmarkers are stuck. it wont let me talk to jorleif and i dont know what to do. i tried to google but it just wont let me talk to jorleif even though my quest marker says ''get jorleif's assistance"

I feel your pain. I glitched my quest by investigating the house before getting told to investigate it. :(

Here is the easy way to do this quest. You MUST have the Unofficial Patch installed:


1. Investigate murder scene. Interview witnesses.

2. Talk to Jorleif and report back to the guard.

3. Speak to Helgird in the Hall of the Dead.

4. Get the key to Heirjim from Tova Shatter-Shield. Check the chest to the left of the entrance. Get the journal part 1. Check the bookshelf with the flyers and get the amulet. Check the closet with the false door and get the journal part 2.

5. Speak with Calixto.

6. Speak with Viola.

7 Speak with Wuunfurth about the journal and amulet.

8. Wait in the marketplace and kill the Butcher.

9. Speak with Jorleif again.

I have done this quest for several dozen playthroughs without problems using this method.

Unfourtunately, I cant download the official patch as it wont work. I tried (I'm guessing it doesnt work if you dont have all the dlc) plus I have the standard edition. I did everything you said, but it wont let me talk to viola or jorleif

1: get the quest started
2: talk to the guard then the onlookers when he asks
3: talk to jorlief
4: come back to the guard, investigate the scene then talk to helgird
5: follow the blood to heirjim
6: ask jorlief about access to heirjim
7: talk to tova and get the key, investigate heirjim, get the 1st journal from the chest get the amulet, get the 2nd journal from the altar behind the false wall
8: talk to jorlief about the amulet, you don't have to ask anything to do with viola
9: see calixto, don't sell him the amulet until after you ask him "shouldn't wunferth have it"
10: go see wunferth and accuse him about being the butcher, he will deny it, then you say you found the amulet and journals, he will say they are not his, then he will ask about the amulet, after some banter he will ask you to watch out after a certain time, i just wait till 11pm that same night then go to the market place
11: kill calixto, get the amulet, see jorlief the next day and thats it
12: i have done this without having to speak to viola at all, the only outcome i have had is when you speak to her after, all she will say is "yeah....what" ( b*tch ).
13: a bit like docsprock's.

You won't be able to find the unofficial patch for the game anymore, you are better off if you really want to get back into the game to get the dlc's then the unofficial legendary patch or buy SSE that already has the dlc's with it, but you will still need the unofficial patch for for SSE anyway.

This is a link to the patch for the original Skyrim and no DLCs. It is rather old, but is the only one available and is better than nothing:

the individual patches are no longer supported or available and are merged into the USLEEP patch which is only for the Base game with all 3 DLCs

And you are correct, having all 3 DLCs is a requirement for USLEEP; it will not work without them (if your game even loads at all, and doesn't CTD).

That's good luck the patch is still there, i think most like me thought it had disappeared into the annuals of history.
