The main point of the story is Alduin, but as an enemy he never really seems that threatening to me, he is supposed to be some god-like being capable of destroying the world? Well how come the first time I beat him i was like level 20? Even in the final fight you don't have to do anything, the 3 heros can clear the fog without you and slay alduin without you lifting a finger, which makes zero sense since they couldn't beat him in the past. Dragons themselves are not much of a threat either, a dragon that decides to land in any city or god forbid the mages college gets destroyed in seconds by the guards.
The blades are terrible too because you NEED them yet they do literally nothing to help you at all, there is zero reason to follow them at all especially since YOU are supposed to be in charge. The Dragonborn rescues Esbern, infiltrates the Thalmor, opens the temple, literally everything for them, yet they do nothing for you in return.
The story is also really short, Escape Helgan, kill the first dragon, go talk to the greybeards, get the horn, talk to Delphine, kill another dragon, infiltrate the thalmor, find Esbern. open the temple, get dragonrend, fight alduin, negotiate a treaty, trap Odahviing, fly to Skuldafn, go to Sovngarde, kill Alduin and your done. This is like 3 hours or something at best.
There are of course mods that address some of these issues but I think Bethesda needs to stop relying on modders to fix there game and make it actually good. Fallout 4 is the same, modders had tot step in to make it decent.
You can't compare GTAs stories to Skyrim's or Oblivion's since they are different genres, it's like comparing Lord of the Rings to Ocean's Eleven.
I can't comment of Witcher though, I've never played them but they are comparable, probably much better though, given my comments about Morrowind and Oblivion.
All the games you list are on Steam; and Skyrim has more players than all of them combined; a lot more, as in thousands; 7 years after release.... so it's probably a good game.
In my opinion what keeps people coming back and playing is the world and the lore. The world and the lore provide a rich tapestry background on which players can write their own stories.
Most games, I couldn't care less about the endings. It's the journey that matters to me. But Skyrim's ending satisfies me completely, and isn't so hard to do that it takes you reloading again and again because it's so ridiculously difficult. Same with Dawnguard and Dragonborn DLC.
Mods, that's why it has more daily players and people keep coming back, I guarantee you if Skyrim didn't have the largest modding community behind it there would be a lot less people playing it.
I'd have to agree, I like the Oblivion main story way better. I'm replaying it now, and I still like it (maybe that is nostalgia talking...). Also, Shivering Isles is by far one of my top favorite stories in all of gaming.
While I don't play CoD aren't you always pretty much a grunt? You are supposed to follow the chain of command, a higher rank officer gives you a command and you follow it. Here though you are the highest "rank" yet they are telling you what to do. Thing is they aren't inept until you show up, Delhine found the dragonstone, and the horn and even knows how to get into the embassy but once you start doing things there usefulness is gone.
It shouldn't matter how many games follow the pattern, it's still bad.
As I said before "Bethesda needs to stop relying on modders to fix there game and make it actually good" Mods are not a solution to the problem, Bethesda has become the problem. They will never say this but they are completely reliant on modders to fix their games, it is the exact reason why they refuse to retire their 2 decade old engine, people already know how to mod it, and it is easy to mod, so when Starfield gets released as the buggy mess we all know it is going to be, Bethesda is going to expect the modders to create the “Starfield Unofficial Patch.”
