Cannot steal urn from house Gray-Mane
I've been able to do this with no problem in the past, but now it is impossible. Day or night, Avulstein is there, and can instantly spot me even though I'm sneaking, invisible (potion) and muffled (spell). I can understand sneak failing, but when you're invisible and muffled and he can automatically see me, there's just nothing I can do. Can I just tell Delvin I can't do it and get another quest? Or do I have to go to jail in order to proceed any further with the Thieve's Guild?

So talk to his mother during the day in the market to start the quest "Missing In Action" then go into their home meet Avulstein let that quest proceed by talking to him ... accepting the job ...

Then a day or two later come back for the urn

Update: After trying every hour for almost a day, I was finally able to find one hour where he went to sleep and I could complete it. However, this still doesn't address the issue of people being able to see you when you're invisible and muffled. Now stealing the pitcher from Brunwulf Free-Winter on the other hand is impossible without an 'exploit'. I tried every hour for 5 days straight, and they never leave the room. They are awake and sitting in their chairs 24 hours a day, including their little boy. I finally succeeded by walking over to the pitcher, which they didn't seem to mind, popping a mass paralysis, grabbing the pitcher, and running.

Thanks Eternie! I'm betting this is the same issue with the Free-Winter's. I'll have to see if there's a quest involving them that I should complete first. Still...this kind of thing shouldn't happen. :-(

If they didn't mind you taking it ... why do mass paralysis and run.
What sort of thief does that? Well it was fun I guess

Scripted events will always happen

They didn't mind me waltzing into their house in the middle of the night and walking over to the pitcher. They definitely minded me taking it!
