Best place to find skill books?
I've somehow made it to level 78 without finding 50 skill books. I've tried to look up locations with the most skill books, but I can't find such a list. All i can find is a list of skill books and where they can be found.

I have no way of knowing which one I've read and which I haven't, all I can do is run around trying to find skill books to read hoping that I'll stumble upon 9 that I haven't read yet. I'm at a complete loss to where to look though.

Well there's a quest for the orc in the college where he gives you like 5 or 10 skill books. Maybe that could push you over the threshold.

And what quest is this? I can't seem to find it on the wiki.

If you are checking the wiki, why not check uesp for the skill book page and whalla, you got a nice list. Also who cares about the skill books, the only time they are useful is at lvl 90+ or so.

I'm trying to unlock the skill book achievement, that's why I'm trying to find them. And I'm looking for locations with the most skill books in them, which the UESP doesn't give, it just lists each book and has a list for each where they can be found. How am I supposed to figure out which of the probably 100 locations listed has the most books in it?

You may find what you need here:

https://elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/Skill_Book_(Skyrim)

EDIT: Based on your post, you may have already found the above. Possibly review the list and re-enter the locations with the most books listed. I collect all books from every dungeon so I can fill all of the bookcases; including the Hearthfire library addition. I end up getting the achievement without really trying.

You freakin' kidding me dude?, a complete list here with all locations:
https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Skill_Books

For a little extra info, you can't just find a dosen skill books next to eachother, college of winterhold has a quest in which you get 5 and one of the black books on solstheim has 5 next to one another, they are pretty much scattered across the world.

You don't seem to understand what I'm asking.

If you check the pages for ores, you'll a chart that lists the locations where the highest number of veins of that ore can be found. I want a list like that for skill books in general. I can't filter those lists by location. I want a list that I can filter by location so I can pick one dungeon and go to it knowing that I would find the most skill books there.

There isn't a location like that, there are a few books that are fixed to specific locations, and there are a couple of quests that generate a number of books, but if you haven't started the quest they aren't there.

The rest is generated completely randomly.

I managed to find all the skill books I needed. I did a search for each hold on the UESP and found that many were located inside of public buildings, shops, and houses in holds. I was able to get the 9 skill books I needed for the achievement by looking in every building in Morthal and Whiterun.

Now, just one more achievement and I'll have them all for oldrim.

I had the achievement, but this thread compelled the collector in me to find all of the skill books. Took care of that last night. I'm glad you were able to work it out!

There's a comprehensive list of 90 skill books and their locations in the strategy guide The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Special Edition (PrimaGames, 2016) at pages 1091-1095. It's organized in a way that easily allows you to check off skill books as you discover them. The guide notes that there are duplicate copies of various skill books and once you get a particular skill, any duplicate copies of that skill book don'y add anything to your skill.

I haven't seen any similar listing online :markarth:
