Interesting, so I guess that means any form of friendly fire then? To be honest I don't remember a single time another follower or npc hit a "downed" follower. I have had friendly fire happen before, usually when magic is involved, but not when someone is down.
She's really tough so I can understand why you'd think that. I'm playing on Legendary and in the early levels she's able to take multiple hits that would one shot me, but you can't have her do all the work.
Apart from reloading a save I have used resurrect 1 command since forever and have not had any problems. If you want to stay "legit" you'll just have to reload a save.
If they get so much damage they simply get killed instead of going in a kneeling position (which transfers agro to another target) they will die, have had it happen a few times.
For OP, as stated above, the only 2 ways are these
1- reload older save
2- use resurrect 1 on the corpse and say, i accept the risk
Some info, higher difficulties greatly increase follower survivability. Also upgrade their gear, it helps :)
Lydia is marked as protected, so this should not have happened, or you may have accidently hit her! No friendly hits here! She is marked protected throughout the game, and can only be killed by the player. It would be save to resurrect her, but it takes more than just the "resurrect" or "recycleactor" console command. If only using one of these commands will remove her from the game after 12 ingame days, and she will be running around in the "death cell" alive and kicking!
It seems they get the protected status when they are kneeling on the ground, but if they get enough damage to bypass that they die. I've seen it happen dosens of times in my level 1 playthroughs and my earlier times on lower difficulties.
The way it seems to work is that the first fatal DoT tick triggers the 'protected' status, thus the rest are not checked against and will kill the afflicted NPC or follower if not removed/out-healed. Resistances *do* apply, which is why some followers/NPCs will survive situations where others do not.
Gearing out your followers can help a lot, especially if you enchant for resistances and/or health, though at high(er) levels some opponents may well just be too strong as the player often has far more HP than any follower or NPC can.
In the vanilla game essential NPCs can't die, and protected NPCs can only die when killed by the player. Unless ... you're using mods or console commands!
DoT is only affected by spells and enchantments. It simply means damage is increased over time during the time a spell or enchantment is in effect, most of the time just a few seconds. The effect will stop once an NPC is in bleedout state. At that point no further damage will be done, it will only take longer for that NPC to get out of bleedout state.
If anyone has any SOLID info on this, I would be pleased to know!
