Horse leaves when dismounted
My own horse starts to leave when I dismount, like a stolen horse would.
It also doesn't appear next to me when fast traveling, if it wasn't near me when I last did.
Does anyone know what is causing this or how to fix it

A horse will tend to leave the area once you dismount it if any enemies are near by trying to attack you or your horse, or if it feels any threat.

If your horse does not spawn next to you or somewhere close by when you fast travel then that means it either died or it glitched/bugged somewhere.

Try Fast travelling somewhere else or loading a previous save file to see if your horse will spawn next to you after you fast travel.

If your horse does not appear next to you after you loaded the latest auto-save file then its probably dead. Try loading a more previous save file where you know its alive.

The game is many years old and it does tend to have a lot of bugs and glitches.

The fact the horse leaves the area or when you exit a cave to find your mount where you left it and its not there tends to happen a lot even to me and many people i know who play the game, its practically a common thing.

Now i dont know if there is a mod that can fix this but i have seen that there is a mod where you can "Whistle" to call your horse to come to you.

Is it actually your horse? Did you buy it or just jump on one you found? If it is your horse, it should respawn when you fast
travel.

It continues to happen, I thought it might have died, but it was there when I visited the stable where I bought it, clearly showing my character name.
It happens every single time, no matter how peaceful an area.
I have fast traveled a lot, it will either leave or not show up at all, it's very annoying and inconvenient

Click on the horse in the console and type getowner (I think that's it). If your name doens't pop up, it's not your horse.
type setownership and the horse will be yours.

No Inoffical patch? because that bug:
Dead horses owned by the player will respawn at the corresponding stables that sold them, even though a new horse will have been generated (and/or sold) to replace them. The dead horses (now alive), have the original Ref. Nos. and the correct name ([Player]'s Horse), but they behave as if the horses are free horses (legal to ride but will return to original position once dismounted).

is fixed by it..

Post your load order.

I bought a new horse since it kept leaving and not showing up, but the new horse behaves in the same way

#1 mods yes / no - if yes then load order pls. if you dont know how to get it, then open loot and click on the 3 dots upper right corner and copy load order. if you dont own loot, then download it at https://loot.github.io/

#2 does this problem happen in a NEW game?

I'm playing it unmodded without dlc, just because

Haven't tried making a new game, would rather not, planning to uninstall and install again, see if that fixes it

nobody said anything about deleting old saves. make a hard save which stays.

trying a new game, and buy a horse there (money you can give you with the console) will tell us if there is an underlying problem with the game or worse with your save game

I don't think it's the game itself, since it was working fine, up until shortly before getting Shadowmere from the Dark Brotherhood.
Shadowmere didn't have the problem for a while, but then suddenly it started not spawning with me and then I just couldn't find it anywhere

if you think yourself thats its probably not the games fault, why doing stuff for testing if the game is at fault?

if something acting up in the savegame, a file validation / reinstall will not fix it. only way in this case would be to find a save before the game was acting up. the worst possible case is to start a new character.

I was hoping for someone having experienced something similar who could give me a different solution, since it was quite a long time ago in game time.
Thank you for your replies :)

I've run into this glitch before myself. Horses kept wandering back to their origin point anytime I get off it. I quit using horses at all for a while because of it. A couple characters later I tried it again and they wored fine as they should. I never did find out what caused it just that it remained thru that whole game and I agree that it gets VERY annoying when that is your preferred mode of transport. Now I am probably about 50/50 on horses. Sometimes I will use them sometimes not. I always buy them but may not actually ever use them. I even have 3 or 4 mods that give me free ones that I may or may not ever use.

A good bit of my travel now is done by carraige to the nearest city to my destination and then on foot to where I am going. This gives me more opportunities to grab ingredients along the way too as well as take down some game for dinner. This travel method is fairly immursive too so I have gotten out of the fast travel habit with it.
