I've been modding Bethesda games for awhile, especially Skyrim but this is the first time I've tried not only more mods but taking a more manual approach in manually moving load orders around. I've actually been trying to find information on how to patch/merge plugins as I know I've reached that limit. I've been reading the documentation for the Merge Plugins utility (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/69905) but I've been wondering how you know "what" to merge. Do you try to group different things together like weapons mods, armor mods, texture, etc. or is it more for taking plugins of the one mod and merging them together?
I have about 334 mods translating to 423 plugins listed in Vortex. I let Vortex sort the ones it could and I read mod pages for the ones Vortex didn't know and then spent the rest of the time moving the load order around based on a load order structure I found online. When I start the game, nothing happens. When I run the game through SKSE, I see the exe show up in Task Manager and then it disappears.
I've also looked at SSEEdit but I don't know what I'm doing there.
Are there any guides/videos out there that discuss patching/merging plugins and SSEEdit and how to use them?
So I'd merge True Eyes and KSHair plugins for example.
If you use Relationship Dialogue Overhaul you'll probably need to use some patches with it depending on other mods you've got. Well you can merge those patches to make 1 plugin instead of having 2 or 3 separate ones.
Look at your mod list and see what you think would best fit in 1 whole plugin. Merging a bunch of different ones could cause problems or not. Seems to be trial and error really although you might get lucky and find some info from people that have already tried certain merges.
I only know that Skyrim follows the rule of one, that if two mods edit the same level list then the last one wins, and that a bashed patch helps make these two mods work better with each other. Honestly it goes a bit over my head.

I'll probably watch these videos myself too but for now my game plays fairly well and I'm well below the plugin limit so I don't have an immediate need to.

When you start up SSEEdit and you let it load all your plugins, does it give you an error?
It sounds to me like you might've accidentally moved some plugins around that depend on others and it's causing the game to crash.
You shouldn't have to do much manual sorting if you're using Vortex. At best you'd probably have to tell it to load 1 or 2 mods after another specifically if it doesn't do it automatically.
SSEEdit would tell you if anything is out of place or missing masters when you load all your mods through it. It'll tell you on the right hand side. If it's successful then it'll say "Background Loader finished"
The only error I see in SSEEdit is "Too many full modules" which after some searching led me to the limit of 255 mods. I was surprised as I didn't have this issue with Fallout 4 as I have about 350 mods loaded there. But then I remembered that despite this being a "remastered" version that may have not been expanded. But I cannot get past the Module Selection popup due to that error.
So I did have one issue I was working on. I had a dependency issue (forgot what it was called ) where the example was A > C > B, i.e mods were not correctly placed in order. It had to do with about 8 mods, several I remember were Skyrim 2020, Skyrim 2020 4.01 Riften Parallax, SIMM, Immersive College at Winterhold. Anyway the Skyrim 2020s were correct. But there were loops going on with SIMM and Immersive College at Winterhold and one other group. The College was the one that was being loaded last so it took several tries of moving the arrows around (in the graphical "flowchart" view in Vortex) before it cleared up. I can't remember exactly how I did it but I'll post the load order below. I am having a rough time deciding what gets loaded first between texture and graphical mods and locations like the College ones. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Texture overwrites are really just dependent on which ever texture you prefer to you use. You can either use Skyrim 2020 or SMIM as a base and overwrite from there based on whichever texture you want to win. On the Skyrim 2020 page the author says you can let it overwrite SMIM, then have College of Winterhold overwrite that.

The only mods I have that use the HDTPE physics extension are the Illustrious Cloaks of Skyrim HDTPE, Daedric & Divine Cloaks, and lastly HDTPE Weapon sling, which I think is what the error message is about. Since that is the only mod would link with weapons and HDTPE.
