you do not become friends to them or get it cheaper lol thats only with smiths if you do a quest for a lomberjack will send lumber to you house if bilding a house if you pay for it then if hire a follower or peson that gard the house to be a jarl of you house they will get the items you want to decarate and bild the house for you and hire a bard to sing for you also and a coach to take you where you want to go for less or free price

For example: To become Thane of Falkreath, you must perform 3 jobs for Falkreath citizens. (Have 3 citizens think highly of you). For one of these tasks, you may cut firewood for Hert at Half-Moon Mill. Forever afterward, she will say, "Its a fine day with you around". Which is as good as it gets.

Of course, a lot would depend on what you consider 'friends'.

still i can't cut my own lumber there

There's many places around to cut your own wood. just saves you some money.

I have sold lumber to Hert before with other Characters. However, in my current game Hert does not leave her house, and if you pick the lock she throws you out and calls the guards. So there is no way for me to sell lumber to her, eliminating one of the ways to complete the tasks to become Thane. Very weird.
