Salmon roe....

skyrim V: orig.....ive noticed others had probs at one time or the other with trying to get salmon roe, im at the Riverwood water falls and lots of salmon are jumping, i can catch them by hand but are salmon meat, i try burning or shocking them but doesnt seem to do anything, checked down stream and still no salmon roe....any ideas ?

Salmon Roe can be hard to get. You can't get Salmon roe by just 'harvesting' them, you have to kill them. Spells are the best for this, in particular aoe and wall spells. If you own Hearthfire, you can buy a house that has a fish hatchery in it, where you can get salmon roe much more easily.

As for why its so effective, that's actually a glitch. Whoever set the stats for it accidentally switched the numbers for waterbreathing and one of the other effects. This gave the waterbreathing effect a much higher stat than normal, which results in far more expensive potions. As for those potions, they'll be worth so much that no merchant in the game will have enough money to buy them off of you, making it quite difficult to get rid of them, especially since this game doesn't let you just throw items on the ground and abandon them. The one time I did that some stupid npc suddently showed up and put the item back in my inventory, thus forcing me to walk around whiterun over-encumbered. If you're gonna do THAT, bethesda, at least put some trash cans in the game!

Wait, you can use any spell?, i just used unrelenting force.
Also, it is possible to get salmon roe without killing them, but you must catch them jumping up and down those little waterfalls, but that is a pain in the ass.
However, for the OP, from the wiki, "This item can only be obtained with the addition of The Elder Scrolls V: Hearthfire. " So without that, you can't get it.

not using mods....
installed hearthfire and retested problem, nothing has changed with problem, still standing on waterfall, plenty of salmon jumping, using flames with mage build burning the salmon but it doesnt seem to do anything to them... I can jump up and down on the falls and catch plenty of salmon but burning them doesnt turn them into roe....like this ... 10:00

And where did you suddenly get the heartfire dlc from exactly?, cause that should work and no this hasn't been patched out. Sounds to me you pirated it and expect it to just work.

just copied the link from steam search online then pasted in steam, is how i got it since steams not listing it anymore....i didnt have any prob buying it this morn....its also in the guides....

Did you let the cell reset?

If the fish didn't have the roe when you were trying before, they're not gonna magically have it injected into them, only the "new" salmon that spawns there later will get any hearthfires effects.

been gone all day, will go back in and recheck it again...thnx.
just checked and none of the salmon that i took out this morn has respawned so maybe they will respawn in morn, not sure how long it takes for salmon to respawn.

I don't know what you need it for, and how much of it, but the wiki also suggests you can find salmon roe on the east wing (made kitchen) of your hearthfires home, so if you're planning on building one of those, there will be roe.

If you build Windstad Manor specifically, it can make a fish hatchery, now deposit the one roe you got, it will breed salmon, and you eventually get a bunch more roe.

since im early into the game i was just using it in the waterbreathing potion to get alchemy up and to sell to buy speech points with and only needed about 12 roe so wasnt a game breaker, but since was having so much of a prob i thought maybe i might need those again at some point and wanted to fig it out ahead of time.
