Restoration IS a perfectly valid school of magic
But what about Illusion? Most of the spells do basically the same thing (except for Muffle and Invisibility), and on top of that they rarely work. It's the one school of magic that always lags behind the rest in levels and spell books.

I don't see the use of invisibility!
Invisibility is the only Illusion spell I can think of that doesn't require you to create a build revolving around them.
(I've never played a pure mage before, but I do a lot of spellswording/battlemaging.)

Illusion still has aspect of terror, which buffs destruction pretty good and makes it excellent to use.

Muffle also alright when still at lower sneak, it ranks the actual tree on cast and you evade everyones detection.

Muffle's kind of pointless since anyone with a good enough Sneak skill will be able to avoid detection anyways.

Muffle for heavy armour warriors have a great effect. Allowing them to sneak as well

It doesn't work that way. Detection isn't solely based on sight; sound plays a role too. Armor adds weight, and more weight means a higher chance of enemies hearing you when you move. Muffle makes you silent when you move.

I just can't believe they had an illusion school and they didn't have any hallucination or decoy spells. Instead it's just Stop Fighting, Stop Fighting, or Fight Some More

Problem is I've used it and been detected instantly by bandits and creatures.
Both in stealth and out of it.

Muffle works fine for me, the various other illusion spells too, although the ones which make them attack anything nearby usually also alert them to me <rolleyes>. But illusion seems to fail completely, apart from what it shows on screen.

Which is why I don't see the point.

Would have been nice, get them running after a ghost fighter.

The school of Illusion truly shines on higher difficulties. When a bandit can kill you in one hit, you really learn to appreciate the fury and calm spells.
Not to mention more pacifist playstyles.

I don't have time to explain it in serious detail right now but with 100 illusion, all the illusion perks, access to the expert and master illusion spells, and a maxed out enchanting skill there's no enemy you can't "convince to fight for you" with Frenzy. The illusion perk that lets you cast a stronger version of illusion spells with two hands will make it so even high level draugr deathlords can be made to attack other enemies. A high sneak skill helps with that too. Muffle and invisibility will help you level sneak too. Muffle, Invisibility and the Sneak skill kind of have a symbiotic relationship. You could be a pure mage that has 100 destruction and all the destruction skill tree perks but sometimes you would rather just make a bunch of draugr fight eachother. That's where illusion magic really shines. Cast invisibility in sneak mode, then get in the middle of a room full of Draugr and then dual-cast Mayhem. All of the draugr in the room will be fighting each other.

The thing is master spells take too long to cast and lock you in place (but Skyrim has no poise mechanic so you'll probably get knocked out of the casting animation) so I highly suggest that anyone who does a pure mage character to use the mod "Master Spells Should Be Masterful". It lets you cast master spells with one hand and cast them while moving.

I just thought of another great illusion spell that they should have done, a Disguise spell. Basically you would be able to convince people that you're someone else, which would work great for infiltration or avoiding bounties in holds. I mean I'm sure there are a half a dozen magic overhauls that add all kinds of new spells like this, but it's so frustrating that Bethesda didn't put even a little bit of imagination into magic in this game.

In current PT i don't attack animals unless im starving and need the meat to cook (playing with "realistic animals and predators", they don't just mindlessly attack you either). Good to have tools for different kinds of playing.

They're not mutually exclusive. Any destruction mage would do well in being illusion oriented too. The tree buffs the fire aspect of destruction (unofficial patch kindly breaks that tho, another reason to not even look at it twice).

I know this. My previous post was in no way hinting at them being mutually exclusive. I already made my point so i'll go ahead and unsuscribe now.

Were you wearing your best larping outfit while replying that?

maybe i pooped the bed but
You could be a pure mage that has 100 destruction and all the destruction skill tree perks but
...i read pure mage there, i also read destruction, i do 1+1 went ahead and concluded you weren't talking about stealth archers, that seem fair? as a "pure mage 100 destruction" there is no "BUT sometimes illusion this that and the other", destruction is always going to have illusion, in a vanilla game at least. Intentionally or not, your post made illusion sound like the occasional byproduct, and thats the only reason i replied.

Fly away on your dragon then, m'lord.
