Laid To Rest - Without killing the guy?

Obvious spoiler.
As soon as i get near the diary in Alva's house, she runs off. Once i get outside, her and Hroggar are hostile to everyone and get killed.

How do i do this without Hroggar getting killed?
Using the unofficial patch, which means woodcutting for Hroggar isn't an option.

Try doing this during the day. Alva's in her coffin then, and Hroggir's at work. The house is practically deserted then.

That's when i'm trying. While Hroggar's at the mill, i get into the basement, Alva runs off, then i get outside and they're attacking everyone.
Best i've managed is to keep bashing Alva so she can't run off and i can whittle her health down. But for some reason i get -2 relationship with the alchemist woman and Hroggar for killing her.

I always do it at night. Right after speaking to Helgi's coffin. Go to Alva's house, then wait outside by the barrels to the North of her door. She will leave and walk into town. You can then usually sneak in and get the journal. You will often need an invisibility potion to leave, however. You can buy one from Lami in town.

Sometimes, Alva will still get killed in town, other times you can find her in Movarth's Lair and either kill her yourself or let her live.

^ I haven't kept any backup saves (for once) for a couple of hours, so i can't go back at this point :(

I've found an odd resolution: the unofficial patch decided to implement their fix for this in a really awkward way. If you go into the basement with Alva there and she detects you, she'll get up as an enemy (red on compass), but will cast invisibility and run to Movarth's Lair. If you kill her in this time, you get the relationship drop of -2 with Hroggar and Lami.

The unofficial patch made it so that if you grab the book, her friendly relationship with Lami and Hroggar drops to 0 (so you won't get the relationship hit for killing her).

So you have to run in, grab the book, then kill her to avoid all the cr4ppy outcomes.

I go in at night. If Hroggar detects me a "Calm" spell makes him back off. You may need to repeat on the Calm spell. DocSprock's method also works.
