Amren's family sword quest [Amren won't take his sword]

So I saw him arguing with Saffir and offered to bring his family sword back, so I went and got it, but when I talk to him, there isn't an option to give his sword back, just these:

-I'd like training in One-Handed
-You're not from Skyrim are you?

You need to get the quest from him first.

One golden rule, dont take named items in caves. They are connected to quests. And you will now run around the game whit Amrens sword.
Load the save before you did take up the sword.

Did you actually accept the quest or did you just find it? If the latter, then you might have to finish another quest first, probably another item to fetch. Skyrim has this silly mechanic that prevents you from accepting multiple similar quests.

I already accepted the quest, I didn't just find it.

That's strange. Does the quest log indicates you should bring it back? I mean was it properly updated when you've found it? If not, you should try to setstage the quest. Actually even if it seems ok, might be worth checking the quest stage.

The marker is pointing to him... well I guess I'll try this setstage command, but will I still get the reward?

If only the final stage is left, maybe not. With a backup save, you might try some other commands first, like resetai on him, or remove then add the sword back to your inventory, though I'm not it would help.

But at least you can put an end to this quest.

Also, if you haven't already, might be worth checking the wiki about the quest, in case there's info on this bug. If nothing else, it'll help with checking/setting the stage.
