This. Also later you can get Rout etc at higher illusion levels. It's rather fun when it works.
Illusion is very easy to level if you have plenty of magic...just cast muffle.
Very fast in my experience, including this game. I do have LOTS of magic though as a Breton Vamp Mage with the special Magic ring etc. Still pretty fast compared to most magic. Just make sure your regen is high -- otherwise napping is faster. But you only need the adept skill to get the cost managable.
As for sneak -- no need to do any sneaking. I just spam it in front of Delvin (I mean Drevis) -- the trainer/book seller mage.
No, using Muffle at every opportunity will get your levels up fairly quickly. That's the only Illusion spell I've used so far, yet that skill is usually higher than any of my other magic skills.
