Where did you buy that copy?

thrift store.

The disc essentially just allows you to download it from Steam, for which you need the product code. It's only good new, you got shafted.

I'm sorry to tell you, you likely wasted your money. Skyrim requires submitting the product code to steam, which ties it to the account of the original purchaser.

is there a good way to get a product code for it easily?

Sadly I think this is true. The product code is there just for this reason. So people cant share, resell or steal the game.

The only thing you can do is buy another copy, best to do so here on steam. Anything else would be illegal.

Don't know how or what 'Thrift Store' works but you can try to return the thing.

Thrift stores sell old, used items that have either been donated by people who no longer want them, or on consignment.

If you bought it from a thrift store then you're probably hosed no matter what. Obviously it used to belong to someone else who had to activate it through Steam, and that activation is tied to their account. So even if you had the activation key, you wouldn't be able to use it anyway. Steam games are non-transferable.

If you bought from a thrift shop thinking you'd get a bargain, you ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up. Steam product keys are only good one time, and whoever owned it prior to showing up at the thrift shop has more than likely used the code and donated it without thinking it'd be useless to the next person.

My suggestion: Use the disc as a coaster, buy the game from Steam Store. That way you'll have the product key and won't be trying anything that'll land you in prison.

I bought is as DVD version back when it was brand new. There is a sticker on the inside of the case with a number. That is your product code.
