Whiterun guards attacking me for no reason!

I have just started a new character and whenever I try to go to whiterun, 1 or 2 guards attack me and do not stop when I yield. Other guards yell things like "I'm putting my money on the big one!". Is this a bug caused by a mod or something?

More likely you killed or injured a Whiterun guard or citizen by accident in a fight. Usually happens to me when I get carless fighting vampires or dragons, but could be any fight. A misaimed arrow can cause. I killed a chicken like that one time. OMG

No, I know I haven't. I literally just stepped into whiterun and 1 or 2 guards attack me randomly. I don't even have a bounty or anything!

Also, in the "Before the Storm" quest, I am stuck with "Talk to Gerdur" as the objective. I know how to get around this, but I am just saying if it is linked in any way.

I have that same problem. It's always one Whiterun guard whenever I go there, and after that no other guard attacks until I go back to Whiterun.

What about the battle with Companions vs Giant? Guards are not only in entire city, if you hit someone nearby city they can see that and attack you.

Same thing happened to me. After I killed the first dragon they stopped. (I just run past them or avoid them)

Guards patrol everywhere not just the city, you only need to commit a crime in the area, not the city specifically.

Not that I'm saying you have, just correcting the misperception that the cities are all you need to worry about.

Try opening the console using the ~ key. Then, click on the guard attacking you and type "paycrimegold" without the quotes. If the problem is an accidental bounty, this will reset your bounty in the hold of the guard you clicked on, you will still have all your stolen items and it won't cost you anything. Usually works for me after I try it one or two times.

Legendary dragon attacks Whiterun.

I'm hacking it down saving the city from certain death.

Guard jumps in front of my enchanted daedric warhammer.

Dies instantly.

Guards ignore the dragon roasting their village and attempt to kill me.

End up having to kill all guards.

Meanwhile dragon is mercilessly flinging people around.

Kill the dragon.

The cycle repeats itself

I'm having this problem as well, no bounty at all on a new character. Never commited any crime of any kind with my lifetime bounty still set at zero, and yet guards from across multiple holds will attack me for no reason. They will not accept surrender and attack from inside the city or random patrols on the road. I have noticed that fighting back or killing them outright does not give me a bounty, like it's not considered a crime. I really don't want to have to start another new game, is there some kind of fix for this, like reseting all of the faction lists or something?

Don't know if you guys still care, but for anyone coming to this later I may have a solution. The same problem was happening to me where I hadn't commited a crime or had a bounty but random whiterun guards would get aggroed on me, and some of the other guards wouldn't care. I found the solution for me was to simply un-equip anything that was marked as stolen (no, I was not caught when I stole the items).

I am having a very similar issue happening for me right now. I do play with some mods but after some extensive troubleshooting I have determined it to not be the mods causing the issue. Ever since I retreived Esbern from Riften the guards of whiterun will attack me, even when I have NO bounty whatsoever. I even attempted "PayCrimeGold" to try and fix it and attacking a cow to give myself a 5G bounty but even paying it off does not prevent them from attacking me. I am not given an option to surrender after the first attempt to reset it and it is ONLY the Writerun guards that will attack me. Please help. I am almost 100 hours into this playthrough and this is ruining the game for me if I need to completely restart.

Interesting. The only time I have been attacked by Whiterun Guards without having a bounty on my head was during the Storm Cloak/Imperial Civil War - when I was actually attacking Whiterun (the Whiterun Guards attacked me first). After the surrender of the Jarl, and the death of all the Whiterun Guards, there were no more attacks against me.
