Playing with no fast travel!
I have never played this game without fast travel. I played this game for countless hours on my 360 and it never crossed my mind. I don't know why it has all of a sudden crossed my mind now but, it has. I can tell its gonna be a long playthough because it takes forever to get to were I need but i am finding places ive never found :)

That's actually not a bad idea
It'd give a player a good opportunity to take in the visual scenery with each passing area, and more hilarious random encounters to come

Though it might be a bit annoying trying to go from Markarth to Riften or vice versa

This game is one of those games that should never even have fast travel, it makes the game a whole lot harder but also make it so much more immersive. you get to feel how its like to walk around in a dangerous place

If you refrain from using fast travel long enough you will start to forget that it even exists. You don't need the developers to force you to play in a certain way, people are given an option that is entirely up to them to use or not use.

Well no quest has a time limit so, take as many along the way as you can and plan a bit ahead on where to go and what to do.

For example going from riften to markarth. maybe you can make some stops like theat greaybeards town, to river wood, falkreach markarth.

I always play like that and limit fast travel as much as possible. So I travel from one quest location to another, making rounds around the land until I arrive back at the starting point and can hand the finsihed quests in .... and get new ones because I swear no matter what I do, the quest log simply does not get shorter ;P

Not using fast travel is probably the reason that after over 700 hours in-game, I've never finished the main quest.

I rarely use fast travel. Your character gains much more experience by walking/riding the roads. With bandits, assassins, thieves, and wildlife, your skills develop quickly.

Travel is much faster in-game as well. Fast travel from Solitude to Whiterun takes 10 hours of gametime, while riding horseback takes about 4.

Real-time it is not much either. Riften to Markarth trotting on horseback takes all of 15 minutes depending on encounters. Far less if you already have the road cleared.

I remember when I started playing the game forghe first time. It took me 2 hours to learn that there is a fast travel :D Now I use fast travel only for very long distances.

Fast travel sucks becaus you miss alot of things, i never knew that you could meet cicero transporting the coffin of the night mother, and you can help him.

When i get a better pc, i will start skyrim again with alot of mods and no fast travel, it will be amazing :')

So...would you have any recommended mods to support a non fast travel playthrough? When I attempt this, I have a couple of issues that detract from immersion:

1. Need the ability to see / fill in roads on the map. Trying to use straight-line navigation rarely works for mountain destinations. I can find the road AFTER I find the location, but usually not before.

2. Fewer random animal attacks. Truly doesn't make sense; the courier for instance goes all over the place with almost no visible protection, but just walking down a regular road I get continuously bounced by bears, wolves, dragons, necromancers, bandits...

I know a mod exists for #2, and likely #1 as well. So what else should one do to increase the sense of realism when using roads exclusively?

Thanks-

I feel you, i always lose track of the road, i think this helps at least for missions:
"Clairvoyance is a novice-level Illusion spell [...] If multiple quests are active, Clairvoyance shows the nearest one."

If you want realism while travelling, use: campfire mod; frostfall; wet and cold; realistic needs and diseases. (It's so real that is annoying)
P.S- One of thoose mods have the option to disable fast travel, but i don't remember each one.

For a solution to #1 being able to see the roads on the map you can get a mod called "A quality world map"

For a solution to #2 I would not be able to help there. Its never really bothered me enough to look into fixing it. I like the random encounters actually and there are mods that add even more random encounters.

If you want to add more immersion to traveling but, want to get to somewhere faster. I also recommend you check out the mod "Touring Carraiges" It sorta adds a Grand Theft Auto like taxi system. Makes using carriages way more immersive than just a instant travel to differnt citites.

Thanks! So you can setup a hardcore survival mode in Skyrim...I should give it a whirl.

Touring carriages...that sounds like fun. Especially if you can fire arrows while underway.

I dont think you can fire arrows along the way but you can tell the carriage drive to stop at any point along the road anf tell him to wait. Just dont take to long.

If you are looking for a little bit more difficulty look into installing ineed. Adds food, sleep, and thirst.
