How do I deal with bears?

I know the tactic when fighting with Sabre Cats, Frostbite Spiders, 2H and 1H Bandits, Draugrs of all types, Dragons, etc.

But there's one animal I don't know how to deal with. And that animal is the bear. The only way I know how to kill them is simply outdamage him and deal enough damage to kill him before he kills me, or spend a lot of potions trying to stay alive. And since they appear as early as level 10, but I can't really outdamage them until I'm around level 17-20, they're really annoying to deal with.

So, any advice?

You guys have noticed that you can do sideways power attacks in the game? You can use them to avoid the attacking bear and strike it at the same time.

You can also do back step power attacks, which I am using a lot, when fighting against large creatures. It causes a small stagger event. You can continue with forwarding power attack, or side step power attack.

Those combos create a lot of damage. Just dance around it, until you can make another set of power attacks.

You can also use that small moment to climb up to a rock and melee from there. Jump down, when bear climbs up and then deliver a new power attack, when it comes down.

That is how I personally deal with trolls and bears.

2 Kill them first since they are weaker
3 resurrect them
4 send them to kill their mommy and watch how they butcher each other

Easy, shoot them with a bow from far away.

Or conjuration with a GOOD summon while you're hacking it in the back. You need either a distraction or enough distance otherwise you get your ass mauled.

i'm having the same problem, I'm playing as an argonian mage and it's fairly early in the game, I've cleared bleak falls, killed one dragon, the only unlocked shout i have so far is Fus. My destruction spells are my best ones but since I'm low level and have not gone to winterhold yet I only have flames and sparks, but I have the duel cast perk so they made quick work of bandits, draugr, skeletons, and wolves. Oakflesh and lesser ward usually make me tough enough to survive long enough for my spells to kill them and i have an ancient nord sword of cold in case i run out of mana and potions. I'm also good at restoration so usually that keeps me going. I was good enough to beat the Shroud Hearth Barrow and now I'm climbing up to high hrothgar, but there's a bear in the way. I thought at first it would be fine and my spells would kill it, but ITS TOUGHER THAN A DRAGON! My dual cast burning and lighting do almost nothing! My blade attacks take off less than 5% of it's health. Fus only staggers it long enough to get one or two attacks in. I tried outrunning it and it freaking caught me! It runs so fast that I can only keep ahead of it if I keep sprinting and don't look back, if i turn to look or attack it's like an inch behind me. It only needs 3 hits to kill me, 5 if I block. Rips right through oakflesh and light armor like it's not there. I can't heal fast enough to survive, that only buys me one extra hit. Tried to sidestep it but I swear it's attacks practically sweep a 180 degree arc in front of it. The only options I have left are trying to sneak by and trying to run back to the village so guards can help me take it down, but this makes me wonder if I am playing a mage all wrong, it's only adept difficulty and I can't kill a bear? This was the first bear I encountered this game besides the one at helgen, and that was easy. Last playthrough I played as a warrior in heavy armor and it was challenging but not so bad, but as a mage it's like the bears are suddenly juggernauts of death.

Stand on a rock or obsticle slightly higher than them and keep shooting them with a bow / magic.

That's how you defeat 90% of melee enemies in this game ^^

I know exactly what bear you're talking about, I just dodge him cause even on Master (I usually play Legendary) he gives me trouble unless I'm above level 30ish.
Try losing him (and the infamous Frost Troll after him) in the rocks immediately left of where the bear ambushes you.
Bears , unlike enemies such as Ice Wraiths and Mammoths, will rarely be able to give chase and keep up if you just run up some rocks.
The former float, the latter are tall enough to climb over obstacles or strike you down regardless of height, but bears can be juked easily.

strategy: hit him and run away when you take damage so you can heal :)))

I....dont recall having much difficulty with bears as compared to saber cats. how are they different?

I would likely try putting a paralyze spell on one hand, and a sword in the other. I doubt they have much in the way of magical resistances.

I'm honestly curious on how the tactic for saber cats is not working for bears.
