Best way to take out Malkoran?
Level 22 I finally manage to defeat the guy but silly me forgot to save before grabbing Dawnbreaker so when the goddess dropped me out of the sky I was killed and taken right back to the beginning of this pain staking battle.

I've already fought and died to many times. Are there any tips or stratagies to killing him or should I just come back at a higher level?

If you die when you fall down. That may happen if you move your mouse during the fall.
I dont know why it happens, but it does.
Some tips you can always do. Save often, hard saves not quick saves.
If you have all dlc:s add Usleep.
You can also add Skse/Modern Brawlfix.

I don't have any of the DLC's, what is the Skse/Modern Brawlfix? and is there any like in game battle stratagies?

Dieing due to that fall is a common bug, and there are a lot of fixes listed which work with varying amounts of success. The one sure fix though involves one of the very few times that it is ever okay to use the console (but only if all other attempts fail).

As soon as you character begins falling, open the console (the ~ key) and type tgm
(tgm stands for the god mode). Hit enter and close the console using the ~ key. Once your character has hit the ground, and stood up, open the console again. Type tgm
Hit enter and close the console. You are now back to normal game mode and you character has not been killed in the fall.

This, as stated, is one of the exceptionally few cases where use of the console is a legitimate solution to a game problem, and will not break your game.

Unload your loot into the chest in the outside bit, carrying too much is lethal for the bit at the end.

After you float down, go back to the chest (temple's empty) and pick it all back up.

Poison your bow, shoot from sneak, keep shooting until/unless he gets too close, then poison your melee weapon. Paralysis poisons and damage health poisons will get you pretty far, in early game. If there's an alchemy table anywhere nearby, you want canis root & imp stool for paralysis, and deathbell & nightshade (or riverbetty, even better, if you have any) for damage health.

You may enjoy knowing that there's a glitch to allow you to get two Dawnbreakers without cheating. You'll find all the information you need in this topic.

I know this has nothing to do with beating Malkoran, but it might make the lost progress worth it - giving you a second chance to do this glitch before the quest is completed forever.

As for beating him, I opted to stay behind the door into the room and eliminate all the shades to reduce the fight to a 1v1. It should help narrow things down to a duel, allowing you to plan a further strategy. I'm sorry to say that I have no idea what I did to beat Malkoran because I had no problems with it and it was a while ago.

Malkoran is a powerfual and cheap mage who turns into a powerful and cheap lich.

Bring help. Summon Atronachs. Bring lots of Health potions. Bring lots of combat-boosting gear. Bring enchanted weapons. Get a multi-follower mod and bring lots of hired help, like Marcurio from Riften, Stenvar from Solitude, and Jenassa from Whiterun. Let them do as much damage as they can before jumping in yourself.

I'll be sure to keep this in mind when and if I take him on in a different story line.

Thank you everyone for all the help!! Expecially on the dawnstar glitch
