How did the Dark Brotherhood sanctuary eve get destroyed?
It makes no sense to me honestly.
First of all, I can understand Astrid betraying us and all, but how did they even find the sanctuary? Second of all, the big♥♥♥♥♥door guarding the Sanctuary is still intact, but the soldiers are somehow inside. Third of all, why wasn't the Dark Brotherhood able to defend the sanctuary? They were barely outnumbered and they are clearly a lot stronger than the soldiers attacking.
Also, why was Festus Outside?

Had you chosen to destroy the Dark Brotherhood at the start of questline, you'd have known why.

Imperial Forces already knew about the location of the sanctuary and the password to it. All they
wanted was either the person to do it, or a reason good enough to do it themselves.

Multiple playthroughs of Skyrim really make the quests make more and more sense, although i do recommend the "Alternate Start : Live Another Life" mod for doing that.

With Festus I imagine he realized it was an attack and started attacking them outside. So they tied him to the tree and used him as target practise. To get themselves steeled for the fight inside.

not much of a fight, its a cave with one exit. set the entrance on fire and smoke em out.

I would destroy them in one of my plsythroughs.
But 20,000+ gold from their quest is tempting

You'll pretty much always end up with more gold than you can spend no matter what, so go for it.

Some of the bonus items from the assassination missions are nice as well.
