[Solved] "Failed to initialize renderer. Unknown error creating the renderer."
So this notification started popping up out of nowhere, after I took a break from Skyrim and played Morrowind for a while. My game had worked fine before with the 60 or so mods that I have.

Basically when I start the game on full screen, it does not even get to the Bethesda logo. It seems like it's starting for a moment, but all I have is two black windows and the error message.

Now if I start it in windowed mode, I get to the main menu. I was even able to load a save after enabling only a few mods at a time, but with all the mods I have enabled it crashes when trying to load.

I updated my graphics card driver, DirectX is up-to-date, other drivers seem fine, load order is correct according to Loot, the resolution is right and everything else should be ok. I have no idea why it stopped working out of nowhere.

My brain is fried over this, so any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I had this problem and eventually went investigating and found a rouge.dll file was causing the problem. Try removing all of the .dll files in the skyrim directory, test if it runs again. Than slowly introduce them back in testing the game each time, till you find the one that may be causing the break. If it isnt that its most defiantly a resolution/ini problem

Are you using a ENB?

Nope, graphics and lighting mods but never used an ENB.

I have only ever seen this error of yours when using a ENB that I had installed and forgot to change the .ini file for Skyrim. This caused the same message for me which is why I asked.

Ah, I see. This error really started popping out of nowhere, my game was working just fine days before that.

I tried most of the tweaks here and now my game works pretty well on windowed mode. It still crashes once in a while, but not too often. However, I still can't play on fullscreen mode and get the same error notification.

Thanks anyways though, I found a lot of helpful stuff from this link!

What screen size and resolution do you use?

If its like mine or bigger than 2560x1080 then you need to get this program http://www.flawlesswidescreen.org/

It is free to download and use and the maker only asks for donations. There are loads of plugins for older games as well all of which are free.

Unfortuanttly this program will not work with Skyrim SE so you will have to tweek some .ini files. Look here for a guide. https://www.gamepur.com/guide/24795-skyrim-special-edition-wide-2560x1080-and-3440x1440-resolution-settings.html

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for this solution, I am really tired to dig through all this 'install directx, install drivers for your video, sound, cdrom and floppy drive, restart your computer, reinstall windows, throw you computer out of a window and shoot it twice, summon Yog-Sothoth, embrace the darkness, restart the Universe and so on' stuff, and I'm really glad to finally find a working solution.
