Thane of Falkreath bug

I have started a new playthrough and just hit level 10. The courier has delivered the letter to me from the thane and I have opened it thus triggering the miscellaneous quest to speak to him, the only problem is when I go to speak to him I do not get any option to do with the letter and only the two original dialogue option you get before you get the letter. Any ideas?

Quick question; do you have the letter on you when you talk to him? Are you sure? Because the only time this what you're describing ever happened to me was one time when I had stashed the letter in a chest with a bunch of other letters, documents, journals that were no longer needed, etc. I had to go back to one of my strongholds to dig up his letter and take it to him, and sure enough he then began having the needed dialogue options.

I have the letter on me when I try talk to him, I could try putting the letter in a chest and then taking it back out and see if that works.

I've searched out your problem on several forums, looks like it's a bug that may be caused from already doing or have done certain bounty quests in that hold. Some also mention a dark brotherhood connection which triggers a bug of this nature.

You could try resetting his disposition towards you and see if that helps. Create a hard save first, then open the console (~) and type in:

player.setrelationshiprank 00019822 2

Hit 'enter', then exit the console and click on mr Jarl and see if he's cooperating. Again, make sure you have his letter, the exact one the courier gave you, in your inventory.

One more thing,... it appears that if you have any other "kill the leader" type bounty quests active then this quiest from the Jarl won't be available until you clear that one off. Could that be your problem?

Note that under normal circumstances, speaking to him before receiving the letter will simply have him send you off on an additional "Rare Gifts" quest before giving you access to the "Kill the Bandit Leader" quest that you'd otherwise have to wait for.

I don't have any of those quests, I have joined the dark brotherhood but have done nothing with them yet, one thing I did do is kill off all the bandits at knife point ridge prior to getting the letter but that has since reset. I'll give the console command a whirl.

Alright so gave the console command a go and a dialogue option came up "Is there anything else I can do for you my Jarl?" or something a long those lines and it has now given me the quest to assist the people of falkreath to become the thane so that seems to have worked. Cheers for that.
