Lord stone is also a good defensive all around stone, with no drawbacks.
During the leveling process, Lover stone is nice.
Or for some extra carry weight, and saving a perk point, Steed stone is also nice.
The others are fairly situational. Each of the 3 guardian stones is useful if you're just sticking to one area of expertise, but it's outclassed by the lover stone (easy to get early game too), if you're using a mixed class build.
Magic is rather lack luster damage wise in Skyrim without mods.
are you running mods to fix magic? otherwise I wouldn't bother with spells for damage, just carry some paralysis spells and the reduced magicka cost to cast them.
if you don't like the other features of the mod, and just want the standing stones, then you can just use the standing stone feature :D
