How to access display settings?
So i bought the game today, and upon starting it up, everything is fine. The menu loads correctly, i can access the options, everything works. Upon hitting play, everything goes wrong. Two new windows appear, one completely black, the other a text box with the following message,
"Failed to initialize renderer.
Your display doesn't support the selected resoloution. Please set a different resolution in skyrim's launcher under 'display settings'."
upon clicking "ok" both boxes close and steam no longer says the game is running.i have tried steam support, which redirected me to bethesda support, which just doesnt work, i have tried searching through various forum posts, i have tried looking on youtube, i have tried to access the skyrim launcher which hasnt worked (partly due to me not being entirely sure how to access it properly). i also played special edition back when it was free for a weekend so its not like my computer cant handle the game. if anyone has any advice at all it would be greatly appreciated. sorry for the wall of text
tl;dr how to properly open the launcher, i could proberly handle it from there

The launcher should pop up any time you hit "Play" in Steam. However, you can also delete the skyrim.ini and skyrimprefs.ini in C:\Users\**your Windows username**\My Documents\My Games\Skyrim, and that will reset your configurations once you run the game again.

everytime i click play, it automatically opens the start menu for skyrim, tried restarting my computer and it does the same. upon deleting the specified files and opening the game, it automatically sets my configurations and proceeds to do the same as before. thank you anyway for the suggestion

The "start menu" is the launcher, the graphics options are under Options. What is your monitor's resolution?

oh ok, the resolution appears to be 1152x648

Dont think Skyrim can handle that resolution.
Try 1152*864 instead.
