No option to make a follower a steward, and my followers never offer to be. (Accidentally Resolved but would still like an answer)
I have the house called Lakeview Manor, and I've built the base house and the main hall, so I should be eligible for a steward. I've taken several follwers, mercenaries and non mercenaries to my house to see if the dialogue to ask them to be my steward, or if they offer will come up or occur. Nothing has happened and I'm starting to think this is an isolated problem. Im not sure how to do the Hearthfire unofficial patch, and will I have make a new character for the patch to work?

Not sure if this helps but i always just ask the housecarl that the jarl assigns to me to be my house steward.

You could manually look in the hearthfire data files in the creation kit for things the NPC's are able to become, or you could just look for a list of NPC's on the wiki

Thanks for your help guys, but I messed around with some console commands and a few minutes later, the steward dialogue showed up! ^-^

I am not sure why, but when I became a Thane of Falkreach I got the house to build some time before I got the housecarl, or the option for a steward. But I did get it later, after I did a couple more quests for the Tharl. I have only a few mods but they include USLEEP.

Only certain followers are eligible to become Stewards. Check the wiki for which ones specifically. I usually choose Ingjard from Dawnguard to be Steward of Lakeview Manor.

Keep your Housecarls as Housecarls and choose someone else for Steward. That gives you one more sword guarding your home.

I know this is a little late but the solution is pretty simple. Just take the follower you want to be a steward to your homestead and they will immediately offer to become steward there. As long as they are eligible to become one (check the wiki).
