What SkyrimPref file did you edit?
I just tried verifying the files and it says that 2 files failed to validate and will be reaquired. I edited the skyrimprefs.ini file and changed bfull screen to 1 and set my native resolution.
You need to edit the one in your Document folder.
Did you get it to work after verify?
Ive located and edited the one in the skyrim folder. Can't seem to find another one. Not sure but I may have deleted it troubleshooting.
Is anything greyed out, and what settings can you use there?
Try the same setting you have on your monintor, make sure that you put in letterbox if you have one monitor for that.
You should not have any need at all for editing the ini files for that.
Dont edit the one in Skyrim folder, it is one backup.
When I open up the settings in launcher nothing seems to be out of the ordinary or greyed out. I set it to my gaming laptops resolution 1920 x 1080. Still the same result. Box in the corner of the screen.
Perhaps you should try to install SKSE and OneTweak and force the game to run in full windowmode.
SKSE is some you should have installed anyway.
SKSE can be found on workshop or here.
http://skse.silverlock.org/
You will also have need for one skse.ini file.
There is one already done that you can grab and install from here. You can create one free account for download it. Or you can make one your self, that is not hard at all.

Check this guide how to do it. Easy to follow.

Holy hell. After about 2 hours of messing with files I finally got skyrim to be playable through one tweak. Thank you kind sir, couldn't have done it without you. :)
Happy gaming.
