Second, if you have injured them during combat their relationship status towards you may change and they will not consider you a friend any more and therefore will not follow you. You may be able to alter this with a console command.

Make sure not to use the Resurrect command on anyone that you value and want to have around as a follower.
Don't think of it as losing game time think of it as fixing skyrim and being able to make new and better decisions.
It's probably doable, if you look in TES Construction set for the various parameters to reset (script and such).
But it's probably way quicker to just reload as Eternie said. On the other hand, you have a way to learn about necromancy.... so wichever seems the most natural or unatural to you.
