Nvidia GTX 1070 and modding...
I've modded Skyrim lots in the past, with lesser graphics cards.
Meanwhile I have a newer PC, a GTX 1070 and windows 10.
I cannot for the life of me get Skyrim to work with mods.
I have tried several ENB's, I've tried with SweetFX. I've even tried some working backups of earlier modded versions - nothing works right.
I either get 'Failed to initialise renderer, Unkown error creating the renderer', or 'The application was unable to start correctly (lots of numbers), Click ok to close the application'

I'm using MOD ORG 2 and all the latest versions of patches/mods.
So I stripped everything back down to the standard patches, and USLEEP.
Game started. Added ENB. (Currently T.A.Z. Visual Overhaul).
Game started every 2nd time roughly.

Added a couple of weather mods, like true storms, real clouds, realistc water2 etc. Game still starts every 2nd or third time.

What happens is once I click on the start SKSE button, it flashes up the 'Mod Org locked' message briefly, then closes again. Click on it a 2nd time it loads, black loading screen, get the skyrim emblem, and then crashes before the menu appears. Remove the mods one at a time, restart until it works again. Add a different mod, same ♥♥♥♥♥ all over - it's not consistant - I can't tie the fail down to any one mod, or any one ENB. It's like its moody - works whenever it feels like it - but once I get over a handful of 'basic' mods (mods that I've used over the years and I KNOW work, and work well together), it fails to start again. Sometimes by fluke I'll get it to run, but then the next 20 times it won't start again...
I'm pulling my hair out. Papyrus logs don't help - there's only three lines in them that tell me nothing. I honestly don't know what to do - I'm beginning to think it's a combination of Windows 10 and nvidia's drivers for the GTX1070. It's the only major thing that's changed really...
Anyone else have experience with this, or any ideas what might be happening?
As I said, I'm no stranger to modding skyrim, been doing it for years now, successfully.
I get no errors with loot, all mods are squeaky clean, TES5Edit (V4) finds no errors. Everything looks picture book correct. But no matter what mods I choose - it just won't run reliably.

no one?

I wonder if Skyrim needs to configured for your new graphics card? Does the Rendererinfo.txt list your 1070?

I would check the SkyrimPrefs.ini file in your current MO2 profile folder too. There's a line that should probably read something like mine does sD3DDevice="NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070". I'm not certain if that line can cause errors.

If you're using ENBs with SweetFX you might need to use the dxgi.dll file from your Windows>System32 folder instead of the one that came with the ENB.

Eyup @ Crosstown Traffic! Thanks for the reply!
Much appreciated!

1. Well, first up - I cannae find Rendererinfo.txt. Where does that normally live?
2. Yep . my skyrimprefs.ini has exactly that line in it: sD3DDevice="NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070"
3. copied the dxgi.dll from windows to my skyrim directory, and renamed existing versions just to be safe.
Will try again shortly and let you know...
Cheers

hmmm - made no difference

The RendererInfo.txt file should be in your Documents > My Games > Skyrim folder. I believe that file is created when you run the Steam Skyrim Launcher.

Check the iSize H=, iSize W=, under the [Display] header in your MO2 profile folder in SkyrimPrefs.ini to see if the numbers for the resolution are supported by your monitor. I would check the SkyrimPrefs.ini file in your Documents > My Games > Skyrim folder to see if the numbers match the ones in your MO2 profiles' folder and that they are supported as well - all I can think of for now.

Don't worry mate, i've had plenty of issues trying to get good enb's up and running, gave up, decided they do nothing for the game other than add some ooh/aah factor to it.

I've got mine looking looking really good with just normal mods and i don't need 200 fu*king hundred of them either.

@crosstown traffic - resolutions are all ok - I have 1920x1080 selected, but I can actually go up to 5760x1080 - Couldn't find the rendererinfo file.

@ Tramper - hey - could you maybe show me what mods you have running then? I'd be interested to see what you've got - I've just about come to the same conclusion. I just can't get the enb's to work reliably, let alone start - and they're all settings my card should be able to handle with one hand tied behind it's back - I'm sure it's to do with memory boundries and 32bit stuff...
Look forward to hearing from you

if the renderinfo file is either blank or non existent + paired with the render initialise error then there is a problem with your graphics card. either on the software (driver) or on the hardware level. but for some reason the game cant detect the card properly.

try a different ENBoost version. but given that the GPU is important for ENB too, it's either a follow up problem from the first case or a unique problem. sadly no way to tell at this point with the render error still present.

papyrus logs are for debugging script problems not game crashes.

I use a similar hardware setup like you with a GTX 1070 since years on Win10 without problem, independent of Win10 or Nvidia driver version.

if modded properly - this should not be the case

EDIT: typos
