Calixto tries to kill Sophi

I’m trying to finish up some quests I never quite finished and I’m in Windhelm. Evidently I never finished Blood on the Ice because Wuunferth is in jail. So that starts the end of the quest when The Butcher is going to kill again, even though it has been about a year since I started it. In that time I had gotten married and adopted Sophi and Lucia and we are living in Windstad Manor near Solutide. Sophie has always had some problems, strange child, I can’t talk with her for some reason. Did some research and this seems to be a common problem for her.
So I’m waiting for Calixto Corrium to make his move and I see him following Sophi. Neither will acknowledge I’m there so I reset to when I was talking with Wuunferth in the jail, to start it again. But no, Calixto still is following Sophi, follows her to the market and tried to stab her. I almost didn’t interferer, wanting to see if Sophi could be killed, since children can’t be killed, but my motherly instincts kicked in and I killed Calixto. Sophi said “hi Mother” and then walked off. I fast travel home, and can’t find her till 2am, when she walks in the bed room to go to sleep, Says hi, but I still can’t talk to her. Lucia won’t stop talking.
I checked back in Windhelm, and couldn’t find her. But it seems strange that with all the people in Windhelm the game chose to pick Sophi to try and kill.
If I reset Sophi will it fix the bug where she won’t talk to me? Not even sure how to do that.

strange... as i do the quest he follow Niranye to the market and try to kill her and that everytime i play it
