incriminating letter bug

for the darkbrotherhood quest to kill gaius and plant a letter on him im suposed to get a letter and when i start the quest it will say incriminating letter added but i cant find it anywhere. i also tried the console code to get the letter but it doesnt work either. i have no mods. is there a way to fix it or just skip the quest and continue on?

Did you speak to Gabriella? When you do so for this quest, she should give you the letter. If she did not give you the letter, first try reloading an earlier save from before you spoke to her. Using console commands is not usually suggested, as it can have an adverse effect upon later events in the game, up to and including totally breaking your game. (And always save before you use a console command - just in case.)

yes i spoke to gabriella and retried the mission from earlier saves too. its the weirdest thing and i dont want to use any console codes if i dont have too but ive been stuck on the same mission retrying if for a few days now :(

The only thing I can think of then is that after you kill Gaius, use the console code
setstage db06 200
to complete the mission, and then report back to Gabriella (make sure you save before doing this). I've not tried this, but using console commands to complete bugged quests (where that is the only way to do it), is acceptable.
