Breton or Nord?
I love both of these races very much but I'm having trouble deciding. I already know what build I'm going for, heavy armored specialized in either one or two-handed along with some destruction/conjuration. Probably going to end up turning to a vampire lord too. The Breton seems to fit this build the most but for some reason I just feel weird playing a Breton as I think the Nords are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome and I want to be a part of them. But at the same time, when I play a Nord it feels like it conflicts with the build. I know there are Bretons that live in Skyrim but even with that the game makes you feel like you shouldn't be there, that every race has there own spot and it shouldnt mix. And that's probably because of the Stormcloaks and the general racism that all races of the Elder Scrolls share. Either way, I want to hear peoples' preferences between the two races and maybe I'll be able to decide after reading them.

but on that.. I tend to play along a thought of, who would be least liked in Skyrim by the Nords? Bretons in my view.. are ok.. Imperials are pretty much shunned.. Elves minus Bosmer are not very welcome.. ( they tend to talk cute to Bosmer.. like Little Elf.. ) Khajit.. well, we know that one, Argonians.. wow.. Talk about unwelcome...

I'm sure the Nords share the same view of Bretons as the High Elves do, but maybe more positive. Since Bretons are just a mixture of Elves and Men I'm sure they both view them as lesser because of it.

I like the way Nords look more, but Bretons are awesome because of their magic resist.

You can stack Breton magic resist with the Lord's Stone and Agent of Mara for considerable magic resistance at level 1.

I believe that the Nords and Bretons are distant cousins, in that the first Bretons were hybrids between a Nedic ( Humans that were the ancestors of the Nords,, from the Merethic period) and an Elf, so if your looking to be part of a less racist caste then Breton would be the better of the two.

Since Skyrim is the first Elder Scrolls game I played, I loooooove the province of Skyrim. Which is another reason I kinda want to play Nord because I feel like my character would feel the same. I don't know too much about High Rock and the Breton culture, but I know they are based off of the English/French

They are based in name only, though Nords are based on the actual Nord culture in the real world in terms of style, names, and behavior (they are basically Vikings)

Bretons in our world hail mostly from france (Brittany), but also in Britain and were at one time their own specific culture, a Celtic culture of which much of Europe was occupied by the Celts.

But yeah I hear ya, I'm part Irish, and have some Nord in me (Swedish) so I almost always play as a Nord, it's part of my heritage in real life, so it is in Skyrim!

I'm right there with you, the only thing preventing me from playing Nord is how it would fit into the Lore. It also took me a long time to decide between Stormcloak and Imperial back when I was playing Nord because I love the lore so much and dont want to ♥♥♥♥ it up

I feel like Bretons, however, are one of the most versatile races in the game. There are no bad sides to them. You can be a bulky two handed warrior, a mage, or a thief and all would work very well. Skyrim doesnt focus too much on race bonuses and such so any race can be anything, but specifically in lore. Thats one reason I love Bretons but their homeland seems so boring compared to their neighbors of Hammerfell and Skyrim.

Do a playthrough for each!!! That's what I did.

Here is something I think you'll find interesting:

If you look at the civil war questline and it's story/lore it mirrors "The troubles" in Ireland during the 50's, as well as the Irish Civil war, The Empire (Great Britain), Stormcloaks (Sinn Fein/IRA), Imperial Supporters (Pro-Britain), Stormcloak Supporters (Pro Independence)

Though this could be said of many such real world conflicts, though this is the most recent and relatable in terms of the game!

Alright. I'm probably going to give breton a go first and try a different build for the Nord. Thanks for the help

Depends on what you're looking for! If you want a tall character with resistance to frost magic and a bonus to combat skills go Nord. Another fun ability Nords have is their battlecry ability. Loads of fun.

However, Bretons, which I usually play as alongside Khajiit have a resistance bonud against all magic and are generally a very flexible race in what they can do, ranging from Battlemage to Spellsword to Archer.

Exactly. I love their versatility.
I prefer Nords, as they seem to be the most appropiate given the location, but Bretons magic resistance can come in very handy on the higher difficulties.

Definitely agree. Fighting mages in that game gets really hard really fast, especially if you aren't playing as mage yourself, which is part of why Bretons another good choice if you. Especially in the higher levels. But, the Spellbreaker quest isn't all that difficult so if you hit that up early on and don't mind using a shield then it makes all of that a bit easier.
