Staff of Magnus question
I got back into Skyrim recently and I just finished up the College questline and I got the Staff of Magnus, but I feel it's enchantment is kind of useless considering it was billed up as this insanely powerful relic.

So my question is simply this: how would I got about adjusting it's 20 point drain enchantment to something a little more powerful, say 50 or even 75? I understand there are mods out there that do this same thing but I would very much like to do it myself. I was never really involved in modding or anything like this before so I want to give it a go.

Thanks

1. Open TES5Edit and in the Master/Plugin Selection window leave everything checked and click ok.

2. When the background loader finishes, in the upper right click in the FormID block and enter 239a0 This is MG07StaffEnchantment (Staff of Magnus Effect).

3. In the right pane scroll down to Effects>Effect>EFIT->Magnitude.

4. In the for right mod, for me it would be USLEEP, double click the number 20.000000 and change it to 50.000000 or whatever.

5. Exit TES5Edit to save.

Done!!
Wow, way simpler than I thought! Thanks a lot!

TES5Edit looks a lot more complicated than it actually is. With a little experience, you can do just about anything in it. As an example, I felt that the weapon weights were unrealistic, so I went through the records for all the weapons in the game and adjusted the weights downwards - was a pain and did take a while, but, mission accomplished.

You can do the same for almost any record in the game - power up spells, increase weapon strength (or decrease it), change stats to your liking; just about anything is possible - just make sure you have the backup box checked so that you can always reload the original file if things don't work out. And, as always, should you have any questions, just ask.

Now I followed all the steps above exactly. Saved out of TES5Edit. Booted up the game, but the Staff's description still says 20 point absorb. Is that normal?

Yes. Sorry forgot about the description. It has nothing to do with the actual strength, it is just a description. I will find it tonight after work. It is in the Staff of Magnus record not in the record you changed.
Just checking man. No worries. Would appreciate that info but it's not 100% necessary. I tested the Staff after the edit in game and it is waaaaaaay more effective than it was before, so it definitely worked.

Ok, open TES5Edit and select only the mod you changed last time. Now use the Editor ID and type in MG07StaffofMagnus. In the right pane change <20> to what ever you used, i.e. <50> in DESC - Description

For me I would change USLEEP.esp/Weapon/00035369 <MG07StaffofMagnus>\DESC - Description
Awesome! Thanks

A little delayed on this response, but here's a step by step walk through of using TES5Edit to change values.

Once the mods have finished loading in TES5Edit, go to the left panel where the mods are listed.
1. Left click on the + next to the mod you wist to edit, this expands the mod and lists its components.
2. Left click on the + next to the category (e.g. - Armor); this will expand the section and list all the items.
3. Left click on the item you wish to edit; In TES5Edit's right hand pane you will see all that item's information.
4. To change the item's rating, in the right hand pane, scroll down to the section or value that you wish to edit (e.g. - DNAM - Armor Rating)
5. Right click on the value you wish to modify (you should get a drop-down which says Edit; Hide no conflict rows; Column Widths.
6. Left click Edit; a warning box will come up stating that you are about to edit a module file and asking if you are absolutely sure you want to continue, left click on Yes I'm absolutely sure.
7. A box will now appear saying Edit Value and Please change the value - the current value will be highlighted in blue in the space - just type in the value you desire.
8. Once you have entered the value you wish, left click OK.
9. Once you have done all the editing you wish, right click the X in the upper right corner to close TES5Edit.
10. A box will come up saying Save changed files - make sure that the file you edited is checked (by default it should be) - you should also check the box marked Backup plugins at the bottom of that popup box (this saves the original unedited file as a backup)
11. Click the X in the upper right corner of the Save changed files popup. TES5Edit will now close, saving all your changes.
12. It is probably a good idea, after you edit any value, to load ALL mods into TES5Edit in order to ensure that no other mod is then changing the edited value. Just repeat steps 1-4; if another mod is changing the value, the value you entered will appear in red and the mod affecting it will appear next to it (you should probably right click on the column in the right hand pane and then left click on Hide no conflict rows in the popup - this will make any conflict easier to see, without the clutter of other values which are not conflicting). If another mod is then changing the value you editied, you can just repeat steps 5-11 for that conflictiing mod's value.
Am definitely bookmarking this for later. Thanks a lot, man. For real.

Glad to help (even if I was a little slow to find my notes on this).
I think you misunderstand the point of the Staff of Magnus. It isn't a weapon supposed to deal damage. It's a utility weapon, designed to work with the Eye of Magnus. It allows the wielder to tap into the full power of the Eye without being harmed. Have you seen what crazy ♥♥♥♥ Ancano was doing with the Eye? And he didn't even have the staff! Imagine what you could do with it.

But in general gameplay when you don't have an all-powerful, world-destroying artifact in your hands, then yeah, it's pretty weak
