I could be wrong, been a year or two since I installed it.
Something that might be up your ally if your going for realism is a body and face texture set called "Mature Skin," it can be found on the Nexus.
Generally it has more rugged realism than most others.
Your actually not really in danger of making your characters look anime unless you start dabbling in makeup and mods that change the structure of your character's face, so feel free to experiment with textures.
it said that that only effects your character, not NPCs. but it's alright, i found a work-around. some how got a mod to work last night.
