I know Mr. Sheffield hates the console, but after my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ experience with Miraak just now (about to post it), all I can say is:

1) Read ahead for bugs and tips to avoid such issues. Many great sources online. Don't wait to research a bug, research now, before wasting 100s to 1000s of hours.

2) Don't let dragons start spawning until ready to dominate at town fights..
-Don't go to Dragon Rising, or if too late, progress to A Blade In the Dark, but don't finish.
-Only go to towns between 5AM and 9PM, or suffer the same fate with Dawnstar's *Dawnguard* vampires.

3) Reload a save, or start over. If all else fails, learn to use the console...
- "tai" turn off AI, freeze all actors, kill dragon, toggle AI back on with "tai" (no target used).
- "tcai", same pretty much, just combat AI only, the actors don't freeze (no target used).
- "tai" or "tcai" on dragon only, kill it, toggle, continue game (target specific dragon's RefID).
- More options with console exist; use the least invasive, save first, archive, revert as needed.
- Note: Console sucks at targeting. Verify target with benign command first (ie: showinventory)

---

Console:

Research first, be methodical, save, archive, revert as needed. If uncomfortable, or unsure, ask first or research more. In the end, we learn more by doing and by fixing our mistakes.

Bugs:
These links are a great starting point, but each item, actor, location, and quest pages have a lot more.

Don't have any of the DLC so not a problem.

Personally I just take the ham-fisted approach of simply not allowing my precious NPCs to die.

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/23614/

Seriously though, resurrecting them after the fact may not entirely undo the effects of their death. If they were linked to quests, for example, then the game often has mechanisms in place for detecting that they died and making those quests inaccessible: it has no such mechanism for "unbreaking" them in the event of resurrection.

bah, me and my afterthoughts. If the NPC isn't special, like involved with quests, then it seemed to work out okay for me. However, such an NPC wasn't worth the effort anyway. For instance, maybe a beggar that you'd like to keep around would be okay.

In rare cases, "resurrect 1", &/or disable/enable cycles, have helped me fix a broken NPC, like they won't perform a required action to advance the quest, but that is rare: Miraak, Gelebor... I couldn't progress without such measures in ~vanilla Skyrim.

I've also made a few NPCs that were problematic into "essential", like Lod; but I can see where doing this could really break things too. Heck, just turning someone into a Thrall legally can break the game, if the chain of events requires them to be dead.

I've played through the game twice using the particular tweak I linked (for making NPCs essential in bulk). No issues to speak of other than during in Blood on the Ice, which were fixed simply by toggling the tweak off and on again. It doesn't affect the vast majority of NPCs that're supposed to die at some point in the game.

That looks like a sweet .bat; I plan to use that next character.
Thx for link BB.

I wouldn't say I hate it, but I would try to avoid mentioning it to people and only use as last resort. Casual use of it without any future thought does more bad than good. This game is bugged enough as it is.

Have to agree. But to be honest rather use a quick console command than download a DLC.
