Lydia instead or Faendal
I recently bought Skyrim, early in the game I recruited Faendal as my companion.

Having completed the dragon rising quest I was offered Lydia as a companion, how to I allow her to become my companion ?
She says I already have Faendal, is it possible to have both, if not, how do I release Faendal so that Lydia takes over ?

Also is there a preference to have Feandal or Lydia? is either stronger as a companion ?

There are mods that allows you to have more than one companion if you want to. Amazing Follower Tweaks if one of them.

You can talk to Faendal and dismiss him.

If you had actually paid attention to the game, you would have noticed a dialogue option that tells Faendal that you and he need to part ways. It should have been impossible to miss.

Well, Lydia is cuter than that crusty old wood elf

Just talk to the follower, there's a dialogue option to dissmiss him/her.

You cannot have multiple followers without mods.

I think Lydia is a higher level, and therefore a better follwer, although I have no evidence of this.

You really should use something like Amazing Follower Tweaks. Besides allowing you have more than one follower at a time, it allows you to control their inventory so they will use what you give them such as different armor and weapons, and a torch. It also allows you to teach them spells to use at the start of and during combat such as heals and defensive skins, and has commands to summon them, have them relax while you do other things, or dismiss them but have them hang out in your house so you can easily recruit them again without going back to their original location.

The other thing I personally like about AFT is it creates a seperate "backpack" inventory you can quick access without having to mess with all of the items you want them to use. Although you can configure them to be pack mules, I have my two followers carry their normal carry weight limit that is increased using bandoliers, backpacks and pouches from the Bandoliers mod.

There are a ton of configurable settings and an included in game book to explain a lot of what you need to know to use the mod. Check it out.

Although faendal is better as he can teach you 5 levels of archery every time you level up, it's all due to personal prefrence, oh before I forget you can also take your money back if he's your companion. It's a cool thing about the game and it's followers.

Just kill the one you don't want
Amazing, thanks to everyone...
I googled the follower mod and installed it through nexus installer..I now have 2 followers Lydia and Faendal..
Thats an amazing mod, Im going to have to learn the game fully and maybe look for more mods too add

2 other quick q's ,
Faendal's health has become an issue, before installing the above mod/nexus his health would regenerate almost instantly.. but on a recent quest he has a slither of health remaining but its taking forever to regenerate.

Also, can my companions ride horses ? I saw a horse in the wilderness and had good fun with it but Faendal had to run behind..
If I buy a horse for each of them, will they ride them also ?

That's not necessary at all, you can just dismiss them.

On the health. Under you tweaks setting. You have 3 health options. Make sure post combat is checked for normal healing.

Followers ride extra horses is also under tweaks settings. If checked they ride horses by order you recruited. IE if you recruited 2 and only one spare horse the first rides. The other runs. So you can actually make a naked running pack slave if you wanted too.

Alternatively, you can also just use the wait mechanic.

There's a dialogue option for every follower that allows you to tell them to leave. With Faendal, he will return to Riverwood and keep doing the things he did before. Lydia will either return to Dragonsreach or to your home, if you bought Breezehome in Whiterun.

or just use healing magic, tell them to drink a potion.. which doesnt cost you an hour in game time.. very important if your RnD using.
