Hern Essential?
I'm on the Dark Brotherhood quest, Kill Hern, and it sends me to a cave insted of Half Moon Mill (first red flag) but when i try to kill him, he dosen't die and gets on his knees insted. Is there any way to make him non essential?

Hern is not marked as essential in the game, and you should be able to kill him to complete that quest (see: http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Hern and http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Kill_Hern ). The Wiki does not list any bugs associated with that quest. Are you using any mods that change NPC's status? If you have mods, please post your load order (which should be sorted by LOOT).

I'm checking through your mod list to see if any mod that changes NPCs could be causing this. Just a couple of things below (not necessarily the cause of the problem, however).
First, there are two mods that you should use:

Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch by Unofficial Patch Project Team - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/71214/?

Unofficial High Resolution Patch by Unofficial Patch Project Team - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/31255/?

(see: New Players : You must install the Unofficial Skyrim Patches by Nazenn http://steamcommunity.com/app/72850/discussions/0/613956964579064476/ )

Second:
(from Masterlist : Dangerous, Outdated and Superseded Mods by Nazenn
http://steamcommunity.com/app/72850/discussions/0/523890681422555089/ ):
"Dance of Death - Rating: Eight (8)
Last version checked: 4.0
Replaced by: Violens - A Killmove Mod
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/56980/?
Dance of Death is a high quality mod with only a few minor bugs present however development has ceased on it due to lack of time from the author. Violens provides all the same functions as Dance of Death and some more and is also more stable, although it does have extra scripting. The MCM allows more customization and the author is still developing this mod and able to provide support for any issues."

Note: Unless you intend to start a new game, do not replace this, as you should not remove mods mid playthrough.

Don't see any mod in particular that would change his status.
Would suggest that you use TES5Edit to check for conflict.
1. Open TES5Edit and let it load all your mods.
2. Once it has finished loading, in the box in upper left labeled Form ID, type in:
0001367b (this is Hern) and hit Enter.
Hern's record should now appear. if there is a conflict, it will be be red.
3. In the window to the right (where the mod info is showing), right click anywhere.
4. In the box that appears, select Hide no conflict rows
5. You should see a section called ACBS - Configuration and right under that a line labeled Flags
6. On that line (the one marked Flags), if you see any mod that has him listed as:
Auto-calc stats, Unique, Essential
then:
a) Right click on that statement
b) select edit (a warning will come up asking if you are sure you wish to change this - select yes)
c) When the box saying Edit Value appears, uncheck the Essential box (should be 2nd down)
d) Click okay.
7. Close TES5Edit (select Backup in lower left corner of the box that appears, and make sure that the mod being edited is checked)
8. Click Okay.
TES5Edit will close, and Hern will no longer be essential.
9. Load a save from just prior to encountering Hern

Yes, there probably is a console command, but consider this a mini tutorial on the use of TES5Edit (there are many uses for it, and it is one of the most powerful tools you can use when modding your game) - and I personally prefer not to use console, as improper use can totally break your game.

If you don't want,to go through that (completely understandable), than just hold off - I'm sure that there will be others that can provide alternate solutions. Hope you get it fixed and can get back to playing the game!

quest conflict because you must save him so use command (setstage dbsidecontract04 20 )

I think Immersive Citizens allows him to move between his home and Falkreath, but I don't recall it making him essential.

I have this same problem. I think it is a quest from notice boards. I had to "rescue Hern from Lost Knife Hideout"

Geez, someone responds a year and a half later, with bad advice, to boot. If anyone really wants to know what mod is effecting him (or, anything else for that matter), instead of just guessing at it, all they need to do is follow the directions in my post #4.

Now let this thread die peacefully - it's no longer Halloween or the Day of the Dead

Calm down smr, don't get a HERNia over this hahaha

...Joking aside, if anyone else is having this problem, don't follow dxseb's advice. That console command isn't exactly well known for it's stability

LOL!

Whenever someone responds to one of these really old threads, I always get a picture in my head of a skeleton slumped over a dust covered PC - the person having expired in a futile wait for an answer. Or, the person responding, working really hard over the years to be able write something intelligent - and usually (as in this case), failing miserably.

It takes longer than that for someone to turn into a skeleton, not to mention that very few people have an attention span that lo..........
