cant get into college at winter hold, is this a bug?

So faradala asks me to cast a spell of magelight and each time I do it never works, is this some kind of game breaking bug?

do i have to stand ontop of the seal on the ground with the 5 points and cast it? I tried to cast it aiming at the seal but it doesnt work, I dont know what else to do

You need to be a certain extent along in the main questline for this. I'm not sure how far, but you need to at least have visited High Hrothgar I think.

Are you casting Magelight? Or Candlelight?

Candlelight is the self-casting spell that causes an orb of light to float around you.
Magelight is the targeted spell that causes an orb of light to stick to something.
Faralda is asking you to cast the latter. Remember that you can ask her to teach you the spell, too.

to use the Dragonborn option you might have to go back a few saves to before you tried to enter the College, I don't think you get the option after that.. I could be wrong of course?

Don't stand ON the sigil, that makes it a pain to cast spells on to it. I usually just stand at the top of the stairs and cast. Otherwise, as Space Wizard Zach said, make sure you're trying to cast the correct spell. If you don't have it, you can buy it from her for 30g.
