stenvar got lost and then I did a code to move to him and he was dead.....is this a bug

I got on a hourse and lost stenvar thought it was a bug so did a moveto command in console and then he is dead outside the place where I originally found him....what happened to him?

Maybe he died some where along the time he was lost?

I keep trying to use the code to find him but it takes me to the last place where I lost him but hes not there...

I thought he couldnt die?

Well, he is dead now, nothing you can do except reload a save from before you lost him.

No bug, the game is made that way.
All not essential NPC can die in the game.

so what makes them die? I was in alot of battles with stenvar and he got hurt bad but never died

You can have killed him, that is easy to do, he could have been killed by vampires/dragons.

how come some characters wont die when I try to kill them? They just scream mercy and I can keep hitting them, then they start attacking me

my stanvar died in a battle against rifkin. for some reason everyone started attacking me

Mercenaries are not essential.
When they are following, they have a "protected" status which makes them "yield" when they run low on HP, then they'll get up.
When they aren't following however they can die.

Could it be that he left your service and then got killed by some random mobs?

Some npcs are essential (can not be killed) generally they are involved in a quest in some way. Some npcs are protected (can only be killed by you) most followers. Others can be killed by anything. Just google <npc name> uesp. such as;
