Can you start the Dragonborn Main Quest without having done the Vanilla Main Quest?

I use a mod which allows me to skip the entire Helgen sequence, and while I can still start the main quest elsewhere, I was planning to do the vanilla MQ at the very end of my playthrough. However, I also read that the cultists whose attack starts the Dragonborn MQ only show up after you've learned to use Shouts (so after the "Way of the Voice Quest").


So TL/DR: Will I have to start the vanilla MQ first?

you can start any quest at any time. you don't have to follow a pattern with most of them.
you do have to visit high horothgar first to start the dragonborn questline.

at lvl 1 you can also just travel to the rift and then go to the cave

regarding the dragonborn cultists: there is a mod called "timing is everything", which gives you the opportunity to change the quest requirement for the attack. (in general this mod allows you to adjust minimum levels for a lot of daedric and dlc quests and is a must have for me...)

Yes, because that (pre-edit statement) totally doesn't break quest scripts, miscellaneous scripts, or have the potential to screw up the OP's game.

You really need to shut your mouth regarding the console, as it is very obvious you have no clue what you are doing with it, or what consequences you are leaving yourself open to by abusing it.

As for OP:
Even the mods that let you skip Helgen usually have some sort of entry point to the main quest at some point, usually via having you visit the ruins of Helgen, or by directing you to High Hrothgar after you absorb your first dragon soul or learn your first word of thu'um.

You get a hard time doing the Dragonborn Main quest without the main quest (shouts, dragon souls and such)

You can travel to Solstheim and do many quests related to Dragonborn, but the actual Dragonborn questline will not start until you first encounter the cultists.

I have done this many times. You can get several of the Black Books, shouts, and the Bloodskal blade early this way. But you will not gain entry to the temple to start the questline.
