I Need Help With a Quest.

So I found this unusual gem, and I got a quest telling me to go to an appraiser. The quest marker guided me to Maul in Riften. However, he refuses to talk to me. Are there any other appraisers, or do I need to do something to get Maul to talk to me?

im sure you need to get into the thiefs guild then talk to vex to advance the quest

This won't make much sense at the moment but you don't have to do what Brynjolf asks, just wait it out, then speak to him later and the quest will progress from there. That will become clearer once you've spoken to him.

It's advisable to get Maul to talk to you or you could take the route as posted above and approach Vex direct, that's assuming she'll even talk to you as you're not a member.

Well... I'd rather not join the Dark Brotherhood. My character isn't optimized for stealth. Is Vex in the Ragged Flagon?

You dont need to join the Dark Brotherhood. They are assassins. Just go to the Ragged Flagon and speak with Vex.

There is a difference between the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood.
Vex and Maul are Thieves Guild. Nobody in this thread has mentioned the Dark Brotherhood before you.

She is indeed and the Dark Brotherhood you don't have to join depending on your choice, don't ask I'm not telling you'll have to find out for yourself

If it's your first playthrough it's difficult to know the outcome of some quests and where they might lead or things you have to do that you might not want to do, the bonus is that once you've played through once you can restart a new character and pick and choose your quests because you'll know exactly which ones you enjoy.

Ok, I talked to Vex, and while yes I can talk to Maul, there's no dialouge option for the unusual gem. I think the quest is broken.

I don't want to link to a page to show the bug as it gives spoilers away. According to that page one of the PC bugs is Maul not speaking about the gem but Vex should progress the quest once she's spoken to.

Afaik, you can have a conversation with Vex only after you join Thieves Guild.You can't finish this quest otherwise.

No argument from me, I think the Thieve's Guild quests are the worst in the game and I hate every one of them, helping people then stealing from them, that makes no sense to me at all and makes me feel very uncomfortable as a player as that's not how I play. If you have an earlier save you could go back to that, before you picked up the gem ;)

...I can't reload a save since I had that gem for a while, basically meaning I'd have to replay through a large portion of my journey.

There are other quests in the game that require you to join certain factions to complete. I would recommend just not doing them. Play the way you want.

When you finish playing, start a new character and make your characters playstyle different so you can see the things you missed the first time.
