Why is the fern battle trash?

So i reached the fern battle and almost killed him but he got like 9 moves and murdered me, most of my attempts was me realizing that there was better things i could spend my money on and i seriously thought about getting a refund. why is the game so trash? i spent 90% of the two hours playing grinding and i still couldn't beat him.

I managed to beat him first try, but I came prepared though. I first bought out choose goose's healing items before freeing PB and battling fern. Then I focused the two minions beside him til they were out of the battle, and spammed marceline's fire attacks on fern and kept using healing items throughout the fight. He's a bit of a shocker coz of his buffs, but the fight is very manageable.

He got nine moves but i beat him once he started not having 9 moves

just use marceline's fire ability, it killed him in 2 hits for me

did you not have energy? just try using any types of fire attack on him

i couldn't build energy

then buy items that give you energy, you get 1 energy per character turn so I have no idea how you didn't build any
